BARBARA TURLINGTON Obituary

TURLINGTON BARBARA TURLINGTON (Age 85) An advocate for international education and empowerment of seniors, lover of flowers and gardens, books and Beethoven, animals in nature and pets too, but most of all, a lover of people, died September 3, 2017 at her home at Brighton Gardens of Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase, MD. Diagnosed with cancer last fall, for most of the year she lived life to the fullest almost symptom free. A longtime "UU," she was a member of the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda, MD. Barbara Turlington was born in Washington DC to Edgar and Catherine Turlington December 8, 1931, and attended Sidwell Friends School and Woodrow Wilson High School. She attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, completing her BA at American University of Beirut, Lebanon. She also pur- sued graduate studies at at Columbia University. She taught at Connecticut College for Women, and at Mount Holyoke. She served on the founding committee for Hampshire College in Massachusetts, and went on to become Assistant and Associate Dean of Hampshire from 1969-76. From 1976-78 she returned to Washington as executive assistant to the President at the Association of American Universities. In 1984 she became Director of International Education at the American Council on Education, serving on the Board of Directors of Alliance International Educational and Cultural Exchange. She was co-author of a book, Internationalizing the Undergraduate Curriculum: A Handbook for Campus Leaders. In 2002, she was awarded the James W. Dodge Memorial Foreign Language Advocate award from the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Entering Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in 2009, Barbara then served as President of the Residents Association for six years where she was a tireless advocate for the rights and responsibilities of the people of her community. She was an active member of the drama and gardening clubs, and enthusiastically participated in trips to museums, movies, the theatre, gardens, restaurants, etc. In July of this year, she was recognized for her community service and advocacy work by the Village of Friendship Heights. Barbara is survived by her sister Sylvia T. O'Neill, five loving nieces and nephews, and four grand nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her family, her friends, and the staff at Brighton Gardens. A memorial service will be held at Friendship Heights Village Center on Sunday, October 8, at 2 p.m. Barbara is survived by her sister Sylvia T. Barbara was a wonderful teacher. She pushed her students to do more than they thought possible, always believing in them and supporting them. She believed in hard work and taking time to enjoy the beauty of the world and enjoy friendships.
