Benjamin John Walter
Benjamin John Walter of Washington DC died unexpectedly this January 20, 2021. He was 41.Beloved husband of Sunshine Haven of California; creative dad of Sean Walter-Brownlee of Virginia; cherished son of Lydia Maggiora-Walter and Wallace Walter of Alexandria, VA; adored brother of Alexis Walter and Jenifer Walter with Willy Hawkins; hilarious uncle to Cinco, Noble, Seneca of NYC; lively honorary uncle to Ava, Nyla, Noah; best pal to Disco, a good dog rescued from Puerto Rico.Ben loved Sunshine, Sean, motorcycles, trucks, tattoos, travel, beards, coffee. He loved to eat around the world. He worked hard. Composted. Played board games. Used to drive a homemade Batmobile. Sent surpise gifts. Loved live music. Entertained all of us. Eloped to New Orleans. Ordered books from independent publishers. Cooked delicious meals in his bright DC home with fresh ingredients from Sunshine's gorgeous garden. He hugged hard.It's not fair. We are collectively devastated. There was a lot of blue sky ahead. But he knew he was loved and lucky. We will miss him terribly. A memorial service is being planned for early summer.

Ben was my favorite person in the world. I am so glad he chose to love me. I can’t believe we don’t have forever.

Once upon in high school I came to know Ben among a small circle of friends. He was a charming, witty, creative, intelligent, kind-hearted individual who marched to the beat of his own drum and never hesitated to flaunt it. I was very fond of him and remember laughing and laughing and laughing with him. Though our paths diverted and across 25 years later we never spoke again, when I learned of his passing I was immediately very saddened by the universe losing such a unique spirit. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

I never met Ben but wish I had. I stumbled upon this obituary by my mom who found it on the Washington Post. She read it and was touched and wanted to share with me. Ben reminds me of my future brother in law - I could see them being friends. My condolences to Ben’s family.
