It was truly a pleasure to work with Buck for the past year or so. He was a singular individual who’s dedication, experience and creativity was inspiring. Yet, it is his wry sense of humor and patient leadership that I will miss the most. I feel honored to have worked with Buck. His expert knowledge still guides me in my work, and will for many years to come. His loss leaves this world a poorer place.

Gillian,

I just received this week's NPC Record and was shocked and so sad to see that Buck had died. Buck and I worked together for more years than I can count, and he was always one of the nicest and most professional of my colleagues. I was happy that we were able to keep in touch through the Press Club, and will greatly miss our quick chats over tacos in the Reliable Source. My thoughts are with you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Buck made the country a better place with his contributions to his community and to American diplomacy. He enrichened all around him with his warmth, his gentle humor, and his quiet leadership. This is a very sad loss of a very fine man. My deepest sympathy to the Shinkman family.

Knowing Buck was one of the pleasures of life. Wise, witty, and always available for advice, hard work, or a thoughtful conversation.

May it help to know that others care. Take comfort in God's Word, the Bible for strength. He will sustain you. James 4:8

So sorry to hear about Buck's sudden passing. I only had the privilege of getting to know Buck in the last year through some work he was helping us with regarding sales of Harley-Davidson Police Motorcycles through Government programs. I valued his knowledge and understanding and I will miss his counsel. My prayers are with him and his family.

Buck was truly an exemplary man, who loved his country and his family and was fully dedicated to them throughout his life. He will be missed in our office, and in the lives of the countless people who knew him.

Buck,
Fellow Army veteran. Fellow USIA veteran. Good friend. You never forgot what is important in life. You never forgot the people around you. My prayers are with you. Ride on.

I first got to know Buck through the stories from colleagues he worked with at our Embassy in Ottawa. His was one of the names that lived on, as I heard of his passions, his Harley, his truck, his family, his spontaneity and his genuine-ness. I finally met him only after he retired and, as he described what he was up to, he was an inspiration, having found all the joy and happiness he wanted.

My condolences to his family who must miss him, but must also know their good fortune to have been able to be so close to his joy for so long.

I had the opportunity to work with Buck as a member of eDiplomacy at the US Department of State. He was a very pleasant man and very thoughtful. He often referred to the work I helped him with as "virtual calisthenics". He was admired, respected and is sorely missed.

I had the honor to work closely with Buck during this past year at the US Department of State. Would that it could have been much longer … nevertheless, it was a great time getting to know, work with and learn so much from Shinkman … and so, as Buck would often say, as he looked to the future with his perpetually positive perspective: “There we are!”

Buck was always first-class … a fine friend, a great gentleman and a dynamic diplomat.

I will miss him greatly, and always keep him in my heart.

Farewell Buck … Godspeed to you, my friend!

I only met Buck by e-mail, which seems appropriate for an eDiplomacy team member, but colleagues here speak of his legacy and salute his contribution to the State Department. I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet him in person.

Buck, I hope you knew how much I admire and respect you. I'll miss our chats in your cubicle "foyer."

We'll miss you, Buck, a dear friend, neighbor, Harley rider, and downright decent fellow. May you be taking a long ride on a quiet country road forever.
