Bobbie Thompson Obituary

May 29, 1931 – May 21, 2024

After a short illness, Bob passed away at the hospital in Aiken, SC. He lived his life with humor and humility. He always made others feel that they were important and valued.

He started his life in Beckley, WV, middle son to Howard C. Thompson, Sr., and Orpha Fern Lilly. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth S. "Betsy" Thompson and his two brothers, Howard C. Thompson, Jr. and Tommie Thompson.

He served honorably in the Navy during the Korean War. He was the first person in his family to attend college. In 1956 he graduated from Virginia Tech with his BS in Electrical Engineering. He went on to earn is Masters in Business Administration from American University. He and Betsy settled in Rockville, MD and raised their three girls – Helen E. "Beth" Bilson, Marion R. Thompson and Rebecca A. "Becky" Goedeke. Bob was very active with his daughters and their activities, particularly Girl Scouting.

In 1978 he passed the exam to become and Enrolled Agent, entitling him to represent taxpayers. In 1980 Bob and Betsy started Thompson Tax Associates – a family accounting and tax preparation firm. It served thousands of clients during its tenure from 1980 to 2023 when Marion Thompson retired. He was an active member of the Maryland Society of Accounting and Tax Professionals, serving on several committees over the years. He was also a member of the NAEA (National Capital Chapter.)

He is survived by his three daughters, two sons-in-law – T. Blaine Bilson and H. Scott Goedeke, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
