BRIAN MURPHY Obituary

BRIAN P. MURPHY (Age 77)
Brian Paul Murphy "Big" passed away on May 18, 2021 with his family by his side. He was a kind man with a beautiful mind. Born in Providence, RI but a true Washingtonian, he was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament School, Gonzaga College High School, Georgetown University and Catholic University Law. His all-Catholic education shone through daily in his approach to life. A supreme optimist, Brian embraced the positive and ignored the negative, sometimes to his detriment. His moral compass was far stronger than his self-interest. He carried these values throughout his career in law, which was as much a service to others as it was a living. He saved countless individuals and small businesses from ruin and specialized in sticking up for the "little guy" against more powerful entities. Brian had an encyclopedic mind and took pleasure in his study of history, especially the Civil War. He relished the available ear to discuss events such as the little known Battle of Fort Stevens, which took place a short walk from his residence. When free, he enjoyed golf and watching his beloved Nationals. Brian set a powerful example and would hope that his values live on in subsequent generations. He will be missed immensely by his wife Julia; daughter Hillary "Sweets", son Brian; grandchildren Grady and Bodhi, extended family and countless friends. All are welcome to call at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 5949 Western Ave. NW, Washington, DC, on Monday, May 24, beginning at 10 a.m. where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment Private. Memorial contributions may be made to Gonzaga College High School in lieu of flowers.www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

I went to law school with Brian and travelled with him between second and third years to London for summer school in International Law.

Brian was a gentleman. He was the least egotistical person I've ever met in my life.

In London, we were walking through the subway station, a small man was using a phone booth. A much
larger man went into the booth and started punching
the smaller one. Brian immediately got right in the middle of it and broke it up.

He had courage to do the right thing and never boast that he did.

We kept in touch over the years but sometimes there would be six months or so without contact. I just heard of his passing, about five days ago.

Brian gave everybody respect. Respect flowed back to him. I miss him.
