CHANDRA HARDY Obituary

Chandra Singh Hardy (Age 80)
Died on September 11, 2021 in Washington, DC. Chandra was born in Georgetown, Guyana to Olga and Boodhan Singh. She graduated from the London School of Economics and was the first woman recruited to the Young Professional Program at the World Bank. Chandra went on to enjoy a 30 year career at the Bank. She also worked for The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the Executive Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development and several non-governmental organizations including the Dag Hammarskjold Foundation, the Overseas Development Council, the North-South Institute, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the South Centre. Chandra's professional career was centered around working to reduce global poverty. Although she was disappointed at the slow progress in reaching this goal, she recognized that progress comes slowly and believed that she and her colleagues across many disciplines made some important contributions.  Chandra was a collector of paintings, Art Nouveau, and mid-century furniture. She was also an avid hiker and a proud and devoted member of the Wanderbird Hiking Club for over thirty years. She treasured the friends she made and adventures she had with the Club. Chandra is survived by her two daughters, Elena and Sophia; sons-in-law, Robert Allbritton and Cope Willis and five grandchildren Alex, Katie and Tory Allbritton and Eliza and Louisa Willis. Chandra was the eldest of 12 children and is survived by eight of her siblings, Leila Davis, Harry Singh, June-Ann Hu-A-Kam, Janet Singh, Pamela Fawcett, Elizabeth Parris, Sharon Singh, David Singh and their loving families. She was predeceased by her sister, Nita, her brothers, Rudy and Jai and her parents.  Because of Covid 19, the Memorial Mass will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Chandra may be directed to a local DC organization that she loyally supported for the decades she was a Washingtonian, So Others Might Eat.

I enjoyed talking with Chandra on hikes with Wanderbirds. Such a nice person.

I can't believe that Chandra passed away. I had known her in the late sixties, and the last time I recall meeting her was during the World Bank mission to Iran. Amazingly, when I googled her name, the Iran economic report of 1971 surfaced. She was such a great person and regret to have missed the rest of her amazing life and family.
