CHARLES LORD Obituary

CHARLES P. LORD
Died on August 17, 2016 of complications from Alzheimer''s. His spirit was huge and kindness towards every person he met lasted to the very end. His grandchildren called him "Big Guy", a reference not only to his height, but to his resonant laugh and back slapping hugs. He is remembered with fondness by the women whom he served as headmaster at St. Timothy''s School Baltimore and Holton-Arms School, Washington, DC. Charlie graduated from The Hotchkiss School, Yale University and received a Master''s of Philosophy in History from St. Andrew''s University. After college, he served in the Air Force. He became an educator in his 40s after a successful career in international business. He was a pioneer in issues of diversity in independent schools and equal opportunity for women. Charlie''s courage to switch careers in his 40s was an inspiration to his family and to his children''s generation. Charlie was Director of the Washington Bureau of Children''s Express and continued to support educational attainment for children of all backgrounds as Founding Board Member of DreamYard. He also was on the Boards of National Cathedral School and American College of Sofia.Charlie is survived by his wife, Gay; sons, Charles and Thomas; daughter, Deirdre, brother, the Honorable Winston Lord; and beloved five living grandchildren. A service will take place October 29, in New York, NY at St. Michael''s Church. He had an amazing spirit, an infectious laugh, an inspiring soul and he touched my life profoundly for the better. I thank you for sharing him with Children's Express. Gay,
We just learned of Charlie's death from cousin Shelly Barth.
I have such fond memories of you and Charlie at Holton. In particular, our brief show business career with Charlie as Elvis, and you as part of our "Baby Love " chorus line. I cherish our times together. All the best, Nell Hampton

I just found out about Charlie's death and find myself quite sad. Charlie introduced me to St Tim's in 1984 and I have remained. His heart was huge. He was the grandfather to all the girls at the school. When he retired, his portrait was in the HMAC. I would look at it everyday and smile. His presence was always with me.

Mr. Lord - as he will always be known to us Holton women - was the headmaster during all my years there. His door was always open to us and I will forever remember him hanging out with us as seniors in our lounge. He was a generous, kind, and gregarious man who had a profound impact on my life. I will always cherish his memory.

Please except my condolences. May the God of Creation give you comfort and strength. I know Mt. Lord will be deeply missed.

My son Levi was so lucky to have been held by the Big Guy just the weekend before he passed. Big Guy's laugh was contagious and thankful Levi has the same trait. You are in our thoughts each and every day.
