MARSTELLER

CHARLES MARION MARSTELLER III

Born September 21, 1950, to Charles Marion Marsteller, Jr. and Jean Montgomery Marsteller in Washington, DC. Charley passed unexpectedly in his home in San Francisco on July 18, 2023. He was 72. He attended Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, MD graduating in 1968, then Frostburg University in Maryland transferring to George Washington University in Washington, DC. Upon graduation in 1974, he held a variety of positions as a legislative aide in the U.S. House of Representatives with Gilbert Gude and in the U.S. Senate with Paul Sarbanes as well as positions at state and county levels. Charley worked throughout his life as an advocate for Common Cause in DC and San Francisco. Charley moved to San Francisco in 1982 where he headed up the city's chapter of Common Cause. Charley had a strong interest in his family history and left behind 18 indexes of family genealogy he researched that traced his family history back eight generations to Col. Philip Marsteller, who came home from the Revolutionary War to become mayor of Alexandria, VA, and was an honorary pallbearer at George Washington's funeral. Charley donated his research to the Library of Congress. Charley's other interests included collecting stamps, coins, rare books and White House Christmas cards. Charley leaves behind two brothers, Paul Marsteller and wife, Susan and Robert Marsteller and wife, Suzanne; cousins, Clare and husband Roger Blau, Dean Montgomery and wife, Judy. Nephews, Robby and Tommy Montgomery; nieces, Rachel and husband, Doug Story, Lena and Lauren Marsteller and grandniece, Addisyn Rose Story. Arrangements will be private. Any donations in Charley's memory can be made to Common Cause or the charity of one's choice.

Charlie was a fun guy, very interesting, always had a good joke, & was steadfast in his interest in good government, ethics, & speaking for the people. He will be missed.

My mother Marion Hollis Pembroke and I just now saw that Charley died this summer. He had been in contact with her over the years telling her about our common family history. I hope that all his work on family genealogies will be preserved - I would love to see them some day. Our sincerest condolences to your family. Phyllis Pembroke Tougas and Marion Pembroke
