I just found out that Dr Riedel had passed. I´ll always have a special place in my heart for the man who put my daughter back together after a serious car accident. Our family will be forever grateful that his skill and dedication saved my daughter and now we are gifted with 3 wonderful granddaughters. Rest In Peace.

I think about you often and remember your incredible gift as a surgeon, and as a kind and caring person. You always took the time to explain every procedure thoroughly no matter the time or how tired you were. You put my family and friends at ease before every surgery. I wish that you were still here. I am going to cheer on the Bengals today during the Super Bowl, just for you, as I keep you in my thoughts.

I was shocked and saddened when I learned of Dr. Riedel's death. Ten years ago he fixed my cervical spine and I am forever grateful. As a fellow Ohioian, I was pleased at the time that another Buckeye was providing great care in the DC area. Surprisingly, we grew up only 5 miles apart and had acquaintances in common. A big loss for us all!

Dr. Riedel was my neurosurgeon at Columbia. I didn't exactly choose him, rather fate did. I was broken and really this knight in shining armor fixed the problems in my neck. It was 20 years ago this year.... I was 33 and the whole world in front of me. The day was tragic and then Riedel did surgery and fixed everything the best he could.
I was searching online for my doctors and came upon this. It's quite heartbreaking to know this happened to him. If any family is out there.... please know he saved me from a life of what could have been devastating. I am now married with three gorgeous daughters. Heaven gained an angel...God Bless Dr. Riedel.

This past week I was at Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) in Arlington, VA at a doctor appointment. I was sharing my medical history about how Dr. Riedel had removed an ependymoma from my spinal cord. That is when the doctor told me of his passing and shook his head still upset by the news. This made me very sad and upset, too. Dr. Riedel was a wonderful, intelligent and gifted surgeon. He was truly a gentle, kind soul when it came to dealing with patients. During my visits he always took time to listen and discuss my condition without rushing me. This is truly a loss to the community. I pray that his family finds peace in knowing he impacted the world positively and that he was well respected by patients and other surgeons. Memory Eternal.

Way leads on to way, and life has a way of keeping us occupied with daily schedules and challenges leaving little time to stay in touch with people whom we respect, cherish and have shared experiences.
I learned about Chuck's passing this week. What an unbelievable void and a resentment that I did not stay in touch.
In 1990, congress declared the 90s to be "the decade of the brain". At that time I was a sales representative for Codman, a progressive company with milestone innovations in Chuck's world. Chuck and I would see each other weekly to discuss these innovations and pending surgeries, as well as our mutual challenges, both personal and professional. Chuck was a positive person, the glass is half full kinda guy, with an unwavering sense of humor. I once bought a bottle of Elmer's Glue and relabeled it it "Spine Glue", which he kept on his book case for many years. We spent many hours in surgery together, and I remember his coy boy boots, and Cleveland Browns head cover.
Every one he worked with, patients, office staff, nurses, scrub techs and reps loved to be involved with him and his work. He spoke of Will and Jess often, very proud of them.
On my retirement bucket list is a line item to see Chuck for a cheeseburger and beer from time to time. I will miss this man, as we all do, and am honored we shared life. God Speed Chuck.

I just learned of Dr Reidel's passing as I was about to call for an appointment. I only saw the doctor a couple of times but was incredibly impressed and grateful that he didn't push surgery, which is so often the case. He seemed like a wise and caring doctor, and I am so sorry to learn of his death.

April 5, 2017

I m so sorry to hear of this. It's very strange to me since he had done my 2 back surgery's and my Mom was from Ohio (basically why I choose him). I had told him how my sister had passed from that type of cancer and how sad it was (she was 44). He said I hope I never get that. I was going to call for an appt. and saw he had passed. So sorry for his wife and kids. I'm really in shock even thou this is a year later. Monica B.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dr Riedel! I only found out yesterday when I called the office to make an appointment with him! He had been my Dr. when I had a herniated disk a few years ago. He was compassionate and an expert at diagnosing my problem quickly and efficiently, after others stumbled to do so. He also took the time to orchestrate a way (through my university) where I could take my all-day doctorate comps with adaptive features. Although I did not end up requiring surgery, it as only because he was able to help me through this with PT and adaptations. I was seeking him out once again after a new diagnosis (meningioma) yesterday. What a fine doctor and fine man!! My condolences to her family and go-workers! I lost my husband not quite a year ago, also from a similar aggressive cancer, so my hearts go out to all of you!

I just learned of Dr. Riedel's death. I'm so sorry. When I arrived at the hospital for surgery, my wife and a friend had to get a wheelchair to move me through the hospital. I walked out cheerfully a few days later. He combined kindness and intelligence in a way that made me feel 100% comfortable in his hands. A wonderful man, to whom, I feel indebted to this day, and will the rest of my life.

Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my boyhood friend. We enjoyed so many wonderful times together. It was a pleasure to see Chuck 5 years ago at a WRA reunion to reminisce about the old highschool days, in class, on the playing field and on our spring break adventures to Florida. My deepest condolences to Meredith, Jess, Will, his Mother Anna and sister Lee Ann. The Riedel household was was always warm and welcoming to Chuck's high school friends. A finer young man could be found nowhere and it is clear he affected many others over his successful career. Chuck and family will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I only now found out about the passing of Dr. Riedel, and I am numb.

Dr Riedel performed back surgery on me twice, once as an attending resident and then years later as the surgeon. Both very successful.

Thank you, Dr. Riedel. I am but one of many patients in whose lives you made a real difference. You will live in my memory. RIP.

I am truly shocked to learn of the passing of Dr, Reidel. Chuck and I crossed paths at Columbia Presbyterian where he was a neurosurgery resident and I was a resident in anesthesiology. We then worked together as faculty collaborating to treat patients with chronic pain. He was a great surgeon and a great guy. He is an incredible loss.

I've just found out the news, and I'm shocked to learn that such a brilliant and caring person was called home by God so soon. My wife and I moved to DC for my Neuromonitoring job, where I spent a year working with Dr. Riedel. He will always be one of my favorite surgeons I'll ever work with. He was always so kind to me and a joy to be around. It was easy to see how much he cared for his patients and those around him. Incredibly sorry to hear of his passing. Praying for his family.

My mother and I were both Dr. Riedel's patients. We loved him and are devastated that he couldn't beat the cancer. We had hoped if anyone could survive, he could.

We send our sincere sympathy to his family. He was a wonderful man, who will be missed by all of his patients.

March 11, 2016

To Merry and family,
I was a patient of Dr Riedel's. He operated on my my neck and relieved me of a great deal of pain. He spent a long time educating me on what my condition was and what would happen in the surgery. He called me the night before I was to go into surgery to tell me my latest MRI indicated only one level vs two were needed. He sensed my continued nervousness about the surgery and told me we could cancel, even though we were just hours away. A lot of surgeons would not have done that as there was a great cost to him to do it so last minute. He never mentioned any of that and only had my interests at heart. I went through with it and everything went perfectly. I became friends with him over the subsequent years through follow on visits and seeing him at various social functions. I last saw him at Washington Golf at an evening event with Merry. He was always smiling and always had time to chat. He always asked me about my dad, who was a neurologist in St. Louis. He had an uncommonly warm personality, especially for someone who was such a talented neurosurgeon.

I will miss him and am sorry to have never gotten him out on the golf course as we had discussed.

He was a great man and touched many lives in hi all too short time here on earth. May God bless him and bring him home where he belongs.

Sincerely,

Dan Dooley

I was very sad to hear of Dr. Riedel's passing. He was a wonderful man and fantastic surgeon. I will be forever grateful for his care and kindness during my spinal fusion procedure and follow ups. I was diagnosed with Tethered Spinal Cord (a "birth defect"!) at age 50. Quite a shock. Not a routine surgery. Dr. Riedel made me feel so at ease and the 4 hr surgery was a complete success thanks to his skill. There are really no sufficient words to describe my gratitude to him, and what a brilliant surgeon he truly is. He was also so kind to my mother. The world is a much better place thanks to him, and reading all of these wonderful tributes has given me comfort. God Bless him and his family.

March 2, 2016

Dr. Riedel removed an ependymoma from my spinal cord Jan 6th, 2012. It was a delicate surgery to say the least. At the time I didn't know how fortunate I was to have Dr. Riedel walk into the room. I remember him fondly. He was a brilliant man with a warm smile and he had just the right mix of compassion and encouragement. I never enjoyed being sick but I always looked forward to my annual checkup with Dr. Riedel. May he rest in peace.

February 29, 2016

I will be forever grateful for being fortunate enough to have found Dr. Riedel to perform my spinal cord surgery in 2014. I was facing a serious situation, and Dr. Riedel could not have been more comforting and confidence- inspiring, making my situation much more bearable. He was so upbeat, thoughtful and honest, which I appreciated. I always felt that I was in the presence of an exceptional human being. And he was truly a brilliant and talented surgeon. My outcome was amazing, better than I could imagine. My mother unfortunately passed away right as I was going into surgery, and he showed genuine compassion as he found the right words to help me deal with my loss after I woke up from the surgery. He made a difference in my life, as I'm sure he did for many around him. My deepest condolences to everyone who knew and cared about him.

February 27, 2016

So sad to hear the news. I was in awe of Chuck's many accomplishments -- and the courage and grace he displayed at our 40th reunion in June. Too soon, way too soon. My deepest condolences to Merry, Will, Jess and all who knew and loved him.

It was over 40 years ago that Chuck was a great teammate on the WRA basketball team. I think he was the only one of our group that could jump! My deep and sincere condolences to Meredith, their children and their families. It was a treat to see him at the 40th reunion in Hudson last May. You can certainly tell what a difference Chuck made in the lives of those that crossed his path.

February 25, 2016

As I work in our Neurosurgical ICU at VHC I keep expecting to see Dr. Riedel coming around the corner with his cowboy boots on and his smile at the ready. He would sit and talk to us and joke around, his laugh was wonderful. I learned a lot from him about neurology and surgery- he was never too busy to explain or answer questions. I also learned about grace and strength watching him fight his cancer. I never truly believed he would lose, probably because he was such a positive person. I know he loved adventure and traveling and his family was the most important thing to him. I am sending my thoughts and prayers to them, since it is so hard for those of us who worked with him, I can only imagine their pain.

Edward Gallo

February 24, 2016

My name is Ed Gallo. I worked in the OR with Chuck, while he was a Neurosurgical resident here at Columbia, and then upon his return to Columbia as an attending Neurosurgeon. Many late evenings we spent together in the OR, in my capacity as the spine monitoring tech on staff here at Columbia.I remember he always wanted to listen to Reba Mcentire as cases were closing. Then on Friday nights, hop into the plane to return to his family in D.C.
Besides being a fine surgeon, he was always upbeat and energetic, no matter the case or the time of day. A real pleasure to get to know as a person ..and to work with for many years. My sincerest condolences to his family , he will be missed, but fondly remembered.

February 24, 2016

Dr. Riedel performed spinal fusion surgery on me in 2013. Like many of his patients, I am thankful every day that he restored my life. He was an exceptional surgeon but, more than that, he was an extraordinary human being. It was clear that he really cared about each patient and he took the time to help me understand my condition pre-surgery and then to help me develop a healthy, active life going forward. He actually got on the floor in his office to show me exercises I could do to strengthen my back and core and his face lit up with joy seeing my commitment and desire to exercise and live well. I prayed he would recover and am heartbroken to learn today of his passing. My heart goes out to his family and I hope you take comfort knowing that Dr. Riedel saved lives and touched so many people's hearts, including mine. Rest in peace Dr. Riedel and know you were loved by many.

February 22, 2016

Like so many others who have written on this guest book, Dr. Riedel operated on me and took me from months of pain to basically being brand new. After having consulted a raft of doctors who could not pinpoint the problem, he did so in five minutes and gave me my options. Seeing a big pot on his bookshelf marked "spinal glue", I had total confidence that he would fix my problem and he did. When later I thanked him, he smiled and said "it was nothing, just bricks and mortar."

Equally impressive, during my pre op exams, one of the lab assistants said that Dr. Riedel was the only person in the hospital whom he had never heard criticized. Everyone liked him. How many times does anyone hear such a compliment?

In sum, he fit every criteria I have for calling someone a great man. He was competent, he was modest, he saw the funny side of everything, and he was kind.

What a loss that he left us so young. He will be immensely missed.

It's still hard to accept that he is gone. Not many people fight a battle with a smile as Dr. Riedel did. Dr. Riedel, You were our perfect doctor, performing eight successful back surgies on my family (Cavender, Horseman, and Grundler). I remember all the many many late evenings waiting for you to finish the surgery and feeling very anxious to know the outcome. You always came out with a smile extending your big hand, and finishing with good news and sometimes a good story-no matter how tired you were. You gave 100% and then some. Over the 20 years we have know you, you've become a part of our family. You have been with us over the best and hardest of times, especially when my Pop contacted MRSA in hospital two years ago. You promised me that you wouldn't let him die, and he didn't.

It saddens me to learn that you didn't make it through your illness. My only thought is that God has a beautiful plan for his new Angel. I know that he would not let such a talented and kind man leave us so soon without one.

My condolences, prayers, and love to your family and friends during this sad time.

May we all see you again one day as our loving God keeps you close in his Kingdom.

I knew Dr. Riedel only by a smile and a wave as he walked by. I always knew that HE was the right doctor for me , as my orthopedic issues worsened. By the time I was ready to make an appt. with him, I was told that he was ill; That was a few months ago. Tonight I glanced through the obits on-line and saw his name. I will always be grateful that Dr. Riedel was the neurosurgeon on duty when my husband went to the hospital in extreme pain from a herniated disk. He did not insist on surgery, but explained the options and left the decision up to us. We initially went home, but one day later, when the pain became excruciating, Dr. Riedel performed surgery on very short notice, and my husband walked out of the hospital the next day. He even accepted less than his usual fee when our insurance company balked at paying for the surgery because we had gone to Arlington Hospital (a ten-minute drive from our house) instead of Fairfax Hospital (about 45 minutes away). He was a truly kind and principled man as well as a gifted surgeon. Our condolences to his family, other patients, and friends!

Dear Merry and Family: We add our heartfelt sympathy in your recent loss to other messages you'll have received. Several have commented on Chuck's being a man of God. We rejoice in sharing our faith with you all. May God wrap you all in a cocoon of His love and grace.

Mrs. Bailey, Stacey and I are so very saddened by the recent loss of your husband and your brother. We cannot ever know the sadness you and your families are feeling, what we do know is that your faith and the love of all the friends and family you both have will comfort and ensure that the memories of two extraordinary men will never cease. We love you and we will keep you and your entire family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Charles Riedel was clearly God's Man first and last in all that he did. He was a doctor's Doctor, who drew his patients and peer Physicians to himself by his humility, superior competence, trust, and great empathy. As his patient for two back surgeries, I thank God he is with his Lord now, and my prayers for God's Peace continue to be for his beloved Family and all who knew him.

A most honorable, friendly and talented physician. Always tried his best to take care of my patients and they loved him dearly. Rest in Peace.

I was a patient of Chuck's. His keen intellect was obvious, and it was a facet of his total composition, but he kept his "Everyman" sensibility as his day to day style and was so very approachable.

When hearing of Chuck's diagnosis, a good friend and I set up a golf date to a club he had yet played. For that 4 hours, I saw Chuck competing with himself, smiling and sharing stories, and just enjoying being out with the boys. It was a joyful day.

Chuck was a very special human being. I am blessed to have spent time in his presence. God Bless the extended Riedel familiy.
