CHARLES STEWART Obituary

STEWART CHARLES TODD STEWART, JR. (Age 99) Dr. Charles Stewart, emeritus professor of Economics at George Washington University, died peacefully at the family home on January 29, 2022. Son of Charles Stewart Sr. and Leonor Pereira de Magalhães, he grew up in São Paolo, Brazil. The family immigrated to the U.S. when he was 12, settling in Atlanta. His studies at Georgia Tech/University of Georgia were interrupted by WWII. He served in the Pacific theater and earned two Bronze Stars for bravery, as well as a Purple Heart. He spent a year recovering from his wound. After the war he rejoined his family, who had since moved to the DC area. He resumed his university studies at GWU, where he earned a BA, MA and PhD in Economics. In 1953 he married Nancy Thayer Mattei, a native of Puerto Rico whom he met at a Library of Congress-based graduate student group. Through much of the 1950's he was a senior research analyst at the Georgetown University Graduate School Research Project before moving to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where he eventually became director of Economic Research. In 1963, he joined the Economics Department at GWU, where he remained until retirement in 1992. He was central to the growth of the department and served several terms as department chair. He published on a wide variety of topics. Areas of concentration included urban and regional economics, health, technology, education. He also consulted, conducted research and lectured internationally, traveling widely throughout Asia and Latin America. During his long retirement he continued researching and writing, took up poetry and painting. He forged new friendships on his long walks, in particular his cherished "Sangamore coffee gang,' a group of fellow retirees who enriched his life immeasurably in his last two decades. He delighted in hosting annual family vacations in Puerto Rico. He was predeceased (2017) by his wife, and by his four younger siblings. He is survived by his children Eileen (David), David, Jocelyn (Ron), beloved grandchildren Ariana and Gavin, sister-in-law Audrey Stewart, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by Lilian Rivas, the Lee and Lin families, and by many devoted friends of all generations welcomed into their home as family by his late wife and him. Charles never lost his thirst for knowledge or interest in others, was generous to a fault, funny, a Cat Guy. He remained mentally and physically active until his final weeks. A memorial service will be scheduled for later in the year. Donations in Charles' name can be made to Palisades Village (palisadesvillage.org) or the DC Humane Rescue Alliance (humanerescuealliance.org).A memorial service will be scheduled for later in the year. The passage of a year has not dimmed my memory of the good times that Charlie and I had discussing the world in general. He was a great resource because he read so widely and synthesized massive amounts of detail into general principles of life. I really miss lunches with Charlie.
