Charlotte Barker Obituary

Charlotte Harte Barker, 101, died January 26, 2025 at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living in suburban Maryland.
Charlotte was the daughter of a Publican and grew up in Sligo, which is in the northwest of Ireland. At the age of 18, Charlotte left her home and journeyed to England where she volunteered to join the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). England was in the midst of a bitter war with Germany and Charlotte supported the effort as a wireless operator for the Signals Intelligence branch of the Royal Air Force (RAF). Charlotte performed these duties supporting the various missions of the RAF for three years until the hostilities ended in May 1945.
After the war she emigrated to New York where she eventually met her husband, Rowland Barker. Rowland was from Newcastle, England and had also recently moved to New York after serving in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during WWII. Rowland and Charlotte were married and lived in northern New Jersey where they raised two daughters and two sons.
In 1966 Charlotte and Rowland moved the family to their home in suburban Maryland. Once the children were grown, Charlotte started her career in banking where she began as a bookkeeper and eventually retired as vice president with Wachovia Bank. She retired in 1987 and enjoyed her garden and volunteering at Holy Cross Hospital. After 57 years of a very happy marriage Rowland passed away in 2009.
Survivors include her sister Patsy, her children Pauline, Adrienne, Rowland and Les; her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Fulton, MD.
A private ceremony for interment will be held at a separate date.
