To Carol & Family,

Clarke will be greatly missed by all of us. I was so blessed that he made my family a part of his family. Family meant so much to him. He stood on a strong foundation. He was thankful to his parents for his upbringing. He was a strong, kind, generous, loyal, self-sufficient individual with a sense of humor. If Clarke was your friend, then you had a friend indeed.

I met Clarke in November, 1984 through my daughter while they were attending Fisk University. During the summer of 1988 I hired Clarke to work at the Library of Congress. It was a temporary job that I eventually turned into a permanent position for him. Actually, he made it more pleasant working there from day to day. He was so intelligent, and I was delighted when I found out he was a history buff. We shared Harlem Renaissance books and many discussions about History over lunch. Clarke even introduced me to Dr. John Hope Franklin. The following scripture reminds me of Clarke:

Love is patient and kind
Love is not jealous or boastful
It is not arrogant or rude.
Love does not insist on its own way,
It is not irritable or resentful,
It does not rejoice at wrong but rejoices in the right.
Love bears all things, believes all things,
Hopes all things, endures all things,
So, faith hope, love abide,
These three: but the greatest of these is love.

1Cor.13:4-7, 13
