Dr Trouth was an unforgettable source of inspiration and support during my medical school years and after. Truly a singular human being. I miss him greatly

In the fall of 1976 I began life as a freshly minted medical student at Howard University College of Medicine. I was full of expectation but also troubled by insecurities of whether I could make it or not loneliness from being far home and knowing no one. Add in a failing marriage and being on a student visa not able to get much financial help with being from a financially poor background and one can see that I entered medical school under some very adverse conditions. I needed a mentor but knew not where to find one. The school had given me an advisor but after a bland meeting I knew he was not going to be of much help to me.
Luckily I found Dr Trouth at a student and staff get together and immediately I knew this was the kind of person I needed in my life and had been looking for.
In Dr Trouth I sensed I had found someone who had a genuine interest in my welfare not only as a student but in life in general. His kindness and guidance greatly helped me to navigate successfully what were some difficult years of my young life.

One memory in particular was about a Thanksgiving meal that I had at his home. I wanted to return home for Thanksgiving but had no money to do so. I comforted myself by saying I would be okay that being by myself would not be such a big deal. However as the day drew near and one after the other of my classmates began leaving for home a gloominess set in. I never asked to be invited but Dr Trouth sending that I had nowhere to go invited me into his home which for me saved the day.
As someone who grew up without a father I am keenly aware of the depth of the loss that brings to a child. But I was fortunate that in my life I met three men who counseled me, inspired me and showed me the care and affection that one would expect from a father. The first of theses was Victor Edwards the vice principal of my school St Jago High in Jamaica. The second was Dr John Rogers of Connecticut who was instrumental in getting me to the USA to study. When I was having difficulty getting my visa to come here to study my grandmother said he told her he would get me to this country even if he had to go to Jamaica himself to get me. The third person is Dr Trouth.

These three men have helped and inspired me so greatly that I am afraid to think of what my life would have been without them.
This is the highest honor I can give Dr Trouth by including him in this group and it is well deserved.

For me he is truly a most unforgettable person.

Condolences to the family. His life touched so many, if even for a short while.

I recall such lovely memories spent in Jamaica with my cousin Cottie, my dad and my sister Antoinette.  We spent such a wonderful time together and we were never short of facts, stories and a smile.  Cottie was so welcoming, kind and such fun.  In fact, we visited him the very next day for another dose of "medicine".

My dad recalled when Cottie visited him and my mum in England on his way to Europe during the bitter winter.  It was therefore so endearing to see them meet up for the first time after so many years and especially to read that Cottie never forgot the time he spent with my parents as acknowledged in his book 'Times are Changing and the Struggle Continues".
Condolences to us all

Hon., Dr. Isaac C. Trouth, III
