CORNELIA WORSLEY Obituary

WORSLEY CORNELIA CHESTON WORSLEY Cornelia Cheston Worsley was born in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania on August 29, 1925 to Charles Steele and Harriet Morgan Frazier Cheston. Nellie earned a BA in philosophy from Vassar College in 1947 and moved to Washington DC in 1952 to work for the CIA. She married James R. Worsley, Jr. on February 11, 1956 and they shared 62 wonderful years together. They lived in Chevy Chase, MD, where they raised a family, were active in the community and enjoyed traveling together. Nellie dedicated her life to family and friends and is remembered most for her wonderful hospitality and for organizing many, memorable family celebrations. She welcomed all as family, was a fabulous cook, and always had room for one more person at the table. As an active member and tireless volunteer at St. John's Episcopal Church, Norwood Parish, she developed a new Flower Guild to provide flower arrangements for weekly services, weddings and funerals, was a member of the Altar Guild, cooked meals for the poor and homeless through SOME (So Others May Eat), brought meals to the elderly with the Meals on Wheels program, and provided support and counseling through Stephen Ministries. In April 2017, she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Bishop of Washington, Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, at the National Cathedral, in recognition of her service at St. John's church and to the broader DC community. Her certificate read; "your dedicated service inspires us all". Her energy and generosity truly inspired us all. Her activities in the greater DC community included membership and service as an officer of the Acorn Garden Club and tutoring in schools. Nellie was also a musician who sang with the Friday Morning Music Club and an avid tennis player at the Chevy Chase Club. She spent time every summer on North Haven Island, Maine among family and friends in the special island community that she loved. Nellie passed away of natural causes in her home surrounded by family on April 22, 2018. She is survived by her husband (Jim), three daughters , Nelia (John), Julie (Joe), and Charlotte (Eli); six grandchildren, Will (Angela), Alex, Charlotte (Paul), Matt (Hanna), Ben and Hannah; one great grandson (Kino); and a large extended family that includes her brother Charley (Lois) and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Nellie's life will be held Friday, May 4, 2018 at 11:30 am at St. John's Episcopal Church, 6701 Wisconsin Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given in Nellie's name to St. John's Episcopal Church, Norwood Parish or the Southern Harbor Eldercare Services of North Haven, ME.
