I was very sad to learn the news that Danny had died. We met in 1968 and his sense of humor and love of life was beguiling.
It gives me great joy to read of the happy family life he had and his great professional success.
Danny had that Irish gift of gab and always could get a laugh out of me.
I have only fond memories.

It is with a sense of shock and a heavy heart that I today learned of the passing of Dr. Dan Sullivan. On behalf of the alumni of the Georgetown University School of Dentistry and the Dental Alumni Board of the Georgetown University Alumni Association, I offer our sincerest condolences to the Sullivan family.
On a personal note, I had the privilege of being a student of Dr. Sullivan's, early in his teaching career at Georgetown. His easy going and likeable personality, as well as his skill and knowledge, made him a sought after mentor in the Crown & Bridge Department.
His contributions to the knowledge base of the profession of Dentistry, especially in the area of osseointegration will stand the test of time. His passing is a loss to us all.

Mary Lou,
Ed and I were very saddened to hear about Dan. We have wonderful memories of both of you during our college days at Holy Cross, Boston College and beyond. Dan will always be remembered for his sense of humor that put smiles on many faces. He continued to do this in his profession and he must have had a great impact on many lives. Please know that we are thinking of you and your family. We have lost another great Crusader.

Dear Sullivan Family,I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I was a classmate of Danny's at NFA and although I didn't know him well, I am not surprised that he went on to do great things with his life and touched so many people. You have much to be proud of and my prayer for you is that your precious memories will day by day bring you more laughter and joy than tears. May God give you peace and comfort. Sincerely,

Dan Sullivan, Sully to all the guys at Holy Cross. We were on the same dorm floors our Junior and Senior years. Great times, like Animal House but crazier. Sully was cool, funny and smart, alot smarter apparently than I ever knew. Very well liked. Last time I saw him was on a playground basketball court in Boston in 1970. Seems like a million years ago and it was.
Dan, congrats on all your accomplishments. We had some great times, rest in peace.

I first met Dan years ago when I needed a very complicated procedure and couldn't find the right guy in DC to do it. Our mutual internist recommended Dan, who came through for me with no problems. He took terrific
care of me ever since. I was also fortunate to get to know him personally, playing golf and sharing stories. He was simply one great guy. My wife, also his devoted patient, and I will miss him terribly. Our deepest sympathies to his family, including Dan Jr, who has become "the man" too.

There aren't any words to convey the sadness that I feel. Doc was a special man who was the constant optimist, truly a force of energy and his legacy will be remembered always through his boys and their sons. Hold your memories tight, they will give you the energy and support you need in times of alone-ness. Bless you today.

My husband had been a patient of Dr. Sullivan for more than 30 years and he always enjoyed visiting him for dental appointments. What a shock to lose such a talented man in the prime of his career. My sincere thoughts of sympathy go out to the family. May God give you all comfort.

My deepest sympathy to Mary Lou, Danny and Brendan. Dr. Sullivan taught me so many things over the 28 years I worked for him and some of those things had little to do with dentistry. He taught me to push myself to be a better technician, to think analytically rather than methodically and to try to have the answer to his next question before he asked it. He was instrumental in my achievement of becoming a published professional author in the Journal of Dental Technology. To hear him say the words "good job" was always the best reward for any accomplishment I made. I'm lucky and grateful to have had my career shaped under his mentorship.
May God ease the sorrow of his loved ones...Rest in Peace, Dr. Sullivan.

We were deeply touched by the sad and unexpected message that our friend Dr Daniel Y Sullivan has left us.
We sincerely appreciate his contribution in the pioneer period of Osseointegration which was of decisive importance for the successful clinical introduction of this prosthetic procedure in rehabilitation of minor and major cranio-maxillofacial defects.
We remember our visit to Washington DC when we did the first Osseointegration patient October 1982, and we have met at several occasions after that, in different parts of the world and we will remember Dr Sullivan as a creative clinician, researcher and doctor and he will be missed by many friends, colleges and patients.
Mrs Mary Lou Sullivan and the entire Sullivan family are in our thoughts and prayers,

Dan Sullivan, larger than life. So many adjectives that fit: brilliant, challenging, hilarious, perfectionistic, and generous don't even begin to cover the facets of this man. I have never met another person who had such a strong sense of himself.
I worked with Dan for over 10 years. We traveled the country and beyond together. He taught me much about business, life and of course wine! I am forever grateful to him on many levels not the least of which was standing in for my Dad and giving me away at my wedding.
There is a song from the musical Wicked called For Good. Borrowing from those lyrics, I will say " People come into our lives for a reason...and because I knew you I have been changed for good." Thank you Dan.
My heart is with you Mary Lou. (Only you will understand when I tell you that I still have my porcupine!)
I feel profoundly saddened by Dan's passing. My deepest sympathy goes to Danny and Brendan. Last, but certainly not least, the unbeatable duo of Pam and Donna; you know what they say; " behind every man stands..." You are all in my prayers. Love, Beth

My heart is at its' heaviest hearing of Dan's passing. Last we spoke he was not severely ill. I am however, so happy that he no longer has to suffer from the overwhelming frustration of experiencing the betrayal of the body over a talent, acumen and drive that few humans achieve. The world has lost a singular man and truly, one of the greatest dentists that ever lived. I know. He was my mentor and we practiced together for years. I have never come across a more innovative or skilled dentist after over 30 years in practice. Some may be equally talented but none, however, were ever, or are better. There was never a more confident man who still knew that empowering those around him made him a better leader. I, as I am sure that many dentists worldwide, would not be as skilled or even know what it means to be skilled at dentistry were it not for the example set and knowledge shared, ever so respectfully and liberally, by Dan Sullivan. The profession of dentistry itself has been elevated because of the innovations that I personally witnessed Dan coming up with starting back when Per-Ingvar Branemark, Paul, Lindy and Dan performed the first root-form surgery and reconstruction in Washington,D.C.. The spillover in everyday life and practice was too significant to recount here. What a terrible loss. My condolences to Mary Lou and everyone in his wonderfully large family as well as Pam, Donna, Carol, Kevin, Gary and everyone else connected to the offices, whom I did not know but sincerely sympathize with.
Rest in peace, my friend.

There are probably not a lot of people who weep uncontrollably at the passing of their dentist, but Donna's call with the sad, sad news left me in that state. Dr. Sullivan was my dentist for about 35 years -- seems impossible, but it's true. We enjoyed our twice-yearly visits -- even if I was never thrilled about any kind of dental work. He called me a "wimp"; I called him a "grouch"; and we both laughed a lot. We enjoyed keeping each other up to date on our families, perhaps because our first-born arrived within weeks of each other many years ago. When I last saw him just a couple of months ago, he was bubbling over with joy, his face aglow with delight, telling me about his new grandson (either just born or about to be born, I can't remember -- he was equally delighted either way). He was a wonderful person, an amazing doctor and my friend. I will miss him. My sincere condolences go out to his family.
