DAVID GOEWEY Obituary

DAVID W. GOEWEY (Age 51)
Passed away on December 29, 2013. David was the beloved husband of 26 years to Sarah Maddocks Goewey and the devoted father of Jack, Claire, and Sophie Goewey of Vienna, VA. He was the loving brother of Catherine Dalton (Lynchburg, VA) and Susan Goewey (Vienna) and uncle to nine nieces and nephews. A partner at Venable, LLP, Dave joined the firm in 1987 soon after graduating from William & Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law, where he served as Executive Editor Research of the William & Mary Law Review. An athlete as well as a scholar, he served as editor of his high school newspaper at Jeb Stuart H.S. in Falls Church (class of 1980) where he also lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended the University of Virginia where he served as a Resident Advisor and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He graduated from UVA in 1984 after majoring in political science and economics. In his law career, David's colleagues and clients appreciated his ability to be "direct" and "get to the point." In his personal life, Dave was known for his wit, humor, creativity and appreciation of nature's beauty, as was reflected in his photography. He leaves a wide circle of friends and has the love and admiration of his extended family including the Honorable John W. Smith and Harriet of Raleigh, NC; the Maynards of Larchmont, NY; the Goeweys of Cincinnati, OH and the extended Maddocks family in the U.K. While his career as a litigator required long hours, he appreciated that it also enabled him to travel widely. He was devoted to his family and he rarely missed his children's sporting events. He stayed active himself and ran the New York and Marine Corps marathons and played in an adult soccer league. In recent years he was on a quest to take his family to visit the top national parks, among them the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion. A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Church of the Holy Comforter. Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Holy Comforter, 543 Beulah Rd NE, Vienna, VA 22180. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Capital Caring- Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center, 4715 N. 15th St., Arlington, VA 22205, or Church of the Holy Comforter. My condolences on Dave's death. Dave and I served together on the hiring committee at Venable for several years and he was a pleasure to work with - his sense of humor was particularly memorable.

Sarah, Sophie, Claire, Jack:

Please accept our condolences and sympathies on the passing of David who we considered to be a colleague, friend and mentor. Words can't express the profound sadness left in the wake of the passing of such a gifted person. We are all the richer for having known him and the poorer for his having departed so early.

I am deeply saddened by David Goewey's untimely death. He and my daughter, Paula Titus Laboy, joined Venable at about the same time and continued their friendship after Paula left the firm. He was a great lawyer who had a famously dry sense of humor and did not take himself too seriously. I was privileged to call him my partner until I left to join the federal bench. My sincere condolences to the family.

We met in kindergarten, but it has been so long since I last saw David at UVA. I am so very saddened to hear of his passing, but pleased to know of the vibrant life he led and the loving people he had around him. My very deepest condolences to the Goewey family.
