DEAN LEE SHUMWAY  
Dean was born in Bend, Oregon on December 28, 1933 to Guy and Hazel Shumway. When Dean was five the family moved to McMinnville where he attended McMinnville schools graduating in 1952. He continued his education at Oregon State University, during that time he married his high school sweetheart Pat Hollis. After graduating Dean joined the Army's 82nd Airborne Division. Dean and Pat had three daughters, Lisa, Kerry and Nicki. After his time in the service he taught Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University. In the 70's Dean moved to Virginia and worked for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. He also coached George Mason University's womens volleyball team for several years. He helped establish the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA). He shared his love of the sport with people of all ages. Dean was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. However his greatest love and joy came through volleyball, where as a player and coach, he won many national championships and MVP awards. Dean passed away at his home in Brevard, North Carolina on July 12, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Laura of 42 years, his daughters Lisa and Nicki, son Scott and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Carol Burnett (Bob) of McMinnville, Oregon and many nieces and nephews. His parents, his brother Donald, his first wife Pat and their daughter Kerry predeceased him. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, September 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at The Avant's hospitality room at Reston Town Center), 12025 Town Square St., Reston, VA 20190.
