DOUG JAY Obituary

DOUG JAY
Doug Jay, 68, passed away in the early morning hours of February 18th, 2022 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was born to Darrell and Elizabeth Jay in Pensacola, Florida on August 10th, 1953 but spent his formative years in the Washington D.C. metro area. He was a born performer and had a 35-plus year career as an international touring musician. This included a decade-long stint in Germany with his band Doug Jay and the Blue Jays. He jammed with Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry and a host of other blues and rock giants. Later years were spent with family, living in New Jersey with his cousin-in-law Joanne and being the best "grunkle" to his grandnieces Kaitlyn and Emma. Other family members that live on to cherish his memory are his brothers Mitchell (Gloria), Charles (Billie Kay) and Robert (Michelle), nephew Jason (Erin), step-nephew Ryan, and his nieces Hannah and Shannon amongst several cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his parents and nephew Sean. A private service will be held in his memory.

Sad to hear. One of his tunes came on today from my random playlist. I hadn´t heard him for awhile but always liked his style. Big fan of his work with the Allstars on tip your waitress.

Was a big fan of the All Stars from Charlottesville--saw them at the old Psyche Delly (in Bethesda) and Desperados (in DC) with Lucille Schoettle on vocals and Dick Green on lead guitar. Great band!

Doug could play! Rest in Peace, bluesman!

I´m so sorry to hear of Doug´s passing. My memory of him goes all the way back to the early 1970s when he played harmonica for the Charlottesville Blues Allstars. Man, what a band and what a blues musician he was!

We lived a few blocks from each other growing up. We hung out a lot always discussing the latest albums. He was a good guy and always a friend. I´ll miss him. RIP Doug.

Rest now my friend. Too much to say, too many feelings. Quite simply one of my best friends. Family really. The brother I never had. We traveled together, cried together over lost loves, hung out in Silver Spring doing "normal" things, shared time at the beach house many summers. I will miss him terribly.

I'm saddened to hear of Doug passing. Doug was a musical inspiration for me as a teen. Getting to know him a little bit later in life was just plain cool... I'll never forget sitting at the dinner table with him and hearing Doug say "I love music. I wish that it would love me back." Doug also said "There are only three good rockabilly songs and Elvis sang two of them". I'm lucky to have these memories. R.I.P.

Doug and I briefly played in a band together, The Turbans, but I learned so much from him in that short time. One of the smartest and most challenging people I´ve ever known. RIP, Mr. Jay, master of the harmonica and NY Times Crossword puzzles.
