I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Douglas M. Chapin.
I remember that I first met Dr. Chapin around 1987 when I was an employee of a Japanese nuclear power company, in a conference room at MPR Associates in Washington, DC. Then, for more than 20 years until I left the company, I asked his MPR for assistance in improving components in nuclear power plants, introducing equipment diagnostic technologies, and so on, which were realized at Japanese nuclear power plant sites. After transitioning to a university faculty position, I invited him several times to give technical lectures at my graduate school education programs. He also strongly supported me in organizing international conferences on maintenance for nuclear power plants that we promoted. Whenever I recall these events, I feel deep gratitude to him.
Through the projects I worked on with him, I knew his wonderful personality and developed a personal friendship with him. And I have come to respect him as one of the few foreigners I can trust. For quite some time now, he had already referred to me as "my old and special friend," which I consider a great pleasure and honor.
When I last met him five years ago, on November 9, 2019, in Ueno, Tokyo, Japan. He was visiting Japan with his wife, and we had dinner together at a Japanese noodle (Soba) restaurant near Ueno Station. We talked about various things and had a wonderful time.
Lastly, I pray for Dr. Douglas M. Chapin and express my deepest condolences to his wife and family.
