James Stewart

December 28, 2009

I met Duane in basic training, Sept 1983 and was immediately tagged as our very own Bill Murray clone. While our paths led to different sides of the country and I retired after only ten years, he was and always will be my friend.

My favorite memory of Duane is Victoria, 1984 and the Great Bunny Caper. Duane, Marc Miller and Kevin Thompson were dropping me off at the emergency room (that's another story) late one rainy night. After being asked to leave the treatment room by the doctor (apparently, one is not supposed to continue drinking rum and coke while in emergency) the three amigos listed above made to leave.

On the way out to the taxi, Duane noticed a VERY large stuffed bunny sitting in the waiting room. Simply put, it just had to make the trip back to Nelles Block with them. They made it as far as the back seat of the taxi when hospital security stopped them.

Apparently the profile of the bunny's ears in the rear window gave them away. Bunny returned,no charges and they went back to the block without further incident.

I heard of Duane's passing almost immediately from Marc but had no way of contacting family or offering condolences until now. I will miss Duane, knowing what a positive person he was and the smile he brought to the faces of those around him.

As mentioned earlier, we had not seen or spoke with one another in 15 or more years. That does nothing to lessen the loss of a comrade, a mate that was there when it all began so many years ago. Duane helped me when I needed it, picked me up when I was down and smiled for me when I could only manage a grimace of pain.

Fair winds and following seas my old friend.

Dear Laurie Ellen, Porter, and Mary:

I had not seen Duane for many years but I remember him from summer band camp out at Fort Qu'Appelle when we were both in high school. I was shocked and saddened to see the notice in the Globe. Clearly he went on to have a distinguished career and a wonderful family. My condolences to you all.

I was terribly saddened to hear of Duane's sudden passing, I am a cousin of Duane's and although I haven't seen or talked to Duane in to many years I do keep in touch sparsely with Lois via e-mail, my thoughts and prayers are with both his immediate family, Laurie Ellen, Porter, and Mary, and Lois and Clare. Sorry I couldn't attend today but I was proud to hear that it was a wonderful service with representation from both the Canadian and U.S services.

To everyone who loved Duane, or in other words to everyone who knew him
I always appreciated Duane because I
knew that from the time he married my little sister I didn't have to worry about her quite so much. I will remember Duane as one of the few who actually go and do what they love to do and succeed spectacularly

Laurie, Porter and Mary,
It is hard to make any sense out of a tragic death. I hope that with kind, generous tributes of love and fond memories of Duane in the guest book that you can turn a tear into a smile. I am a Saskatchewan cousin to Duane. I was a babysitter from time to time either in Langenburg or at the farm in Saltcoats. There are many cousins in Saskatchewan that have your family in their hearts these sad days. If you are ever in this part of the country our door is always open.
Take care,
Love Linda

Dear Auntie Laurie, Mary and Porter,

I feel lucky to have had Duane as an uncle. Both personally and professionally, he has been, and will continue to be, an inspiration to me. Wearing his iron ring is both an honour and very humbling. It reminds me of all the things that made him extraordinary, and why we all loved him so much.

I am so glad for the time we spent together in Ottawa last summer. The memories of that trip are very special to me.

Love,
Graeme

Mrs. Fandrey -
There are just no words which can adequately convey the deep sorrow we feel for you and your family. In the few short weeks Duane was with us, he quickly became a member of our Carderock "team". His smile, his laugh, his sheer excitement of being in DC, quickly and completely endeared him to us. We are so deeply sorry for your loss and may God bless and keep you always and may He grant you peace.

With deepest sympathy,
Jeanne

Laurie, Porter, Mary,
Although we were only just beginning to get to know Duane, he will be sorely missed by our Carderock team. He was eager to start his tour with us and his friendly manner and enthusiasm was endearing. We are truly thankful we got a chance to know Duane and only wish it wasn’t cut short by this tragic accident. Please accept our warm felt sympathies and know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Fandrey Family,

We send our deepest sympathies to all of you!

We were so shocked to hear about Duane's accident, just unbelievable. I didn't know Duane as an officer of the Canadian Navy but know we were all in good hands while under his watch. I knew him as a friend and as a gentleman with a smile, growing up in small town Saskatchewan. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time.

Sincerely, Karen Jensen and Larry Tehse
