EDITH MILLER Obituary

MILLER EDITH EDWARDS GALLOWAY MILLER Edith Edwards Galloway Miller, State President of Maryland NOW, passed away on January 10, 2018. Edith was a lifelong advocate for women's equality and worked tirelessly to advance political solutions to many issues, locally, statewide, and nationally. She was a political force, especially in Montgomery County in the past 10 years. Edith was born October 14, 1942 in Washington, DC and attended schools in Washington, Beltsville, MD and London, KY. She started a lifetime of volunteer service by tutoring poor high school girls in Kentucky, where she lived with her grandparents for 5 years. She was in the first cadre of women licensed as stockbrokers in the early 1970s, when she was a member of Brooklyn NOW. She later owned antique shops in Manhattan and Bethesda, and she received Volunteer of the Year award from the Montgomery County Crisis Center for her work on the hotline. Edith recently retired after 22 years with the American Chemical Society, where she was a budget analyst. After she graduated from UMUC in 2002, Edith continued volunteering on state, congressional and presidential political campaigns in Maryland and states as far as Texas. A longtime supporter of the ACLU, she also served on the board of the Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women. Edith inherited her feminist activism: her grandmother Anna Edwards was arrested at a suffragist demonstration and was the first woman in Kentucky to acquire a driver's license, in 1934, after going to court to enforce the state guidelines. Edith leaves behind a large circle of family and friends, including her spouse - partner of 24 years - Linda Mahoney of Silver Spring, MD. She is also survived by stepsons William Whitecotton of Phoenix, AZ, and David Whitecotton, wife Georgiana and son Daniel of Quebec, Canada; niece Aisha Swanson and her husband Christopher of Clermont, FL; and nephew David Assadi, his wife Paula and children Amber, Alex and Gabriella of Centreville, VA. Sisters- and brothers-in-law include Carol Mahoney and her husband Bob and daughter Katie of Oregon; John Mahoney and his wife Lynn of Bay St. Louis, MS and children Jen, Patrick and Ryan; and the following, in Arizona: Gary Mahoney and his wife Rose; Joy Staab and her children Hope and Christopher; Faith Pourkaveh and her husband James and children Justin and Lauren; Jill Mahoney and her spouse Cindy Walley. The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the significant assistance and support of our NOW sisters and other friends during Edith's final days. A memorial service will be held on March 25 at 2:30 p.m. at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville, 603 Edmonston Dr. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, the National Organization for Women, the Maryland Women's Heritage Center or Montgomery Hospice.A memorial service will be held on March 25 at 2:30 p.m. at the F. Linda, I am so sorry for your loss. I just made a contribution to NOW in memory of Edith. Though I never met her in person, her work with NOW (as well as yours) serves as an enduring inspiration.

Edith had purpose in life, and worked hard to better the lives of those around her. She was a bright and perceptive lady who gave of her time selflessly. Loved her smile.
