Edmund Choy Obituary

Edmund "Ed" Mung Choy, 78, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on September 28, 2025 at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Arcola. Born on April 14, 1947 in Honolulu, HI, Ed attended McKinley High School (class of 1965) and graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa (Magna Cum Laude) in 1969 with a B.S. in chemistry, where he was an avid tennis player and marathon runner. Always dedicated and passionate about chemistry, he was awarded a Ph.D. in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 1973 after writing his dissertation on developing an artificial membrane for transport of sodium ions against their concentration gradient.
Ed worked in private industry and for the U.S. government for many decades. He first worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury) as a chemist. He then spent 10 years working as a sales representative for Millennium Inorganic Chemicals (formerly SCM Chemicals), where he was known for his competitive and innovative strategies in marketing and sales and was recognized for his achievements with an award. He later returned to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing where he worked for 15 years, until his retirement in 2018.
Ed's hobbies and interests were varied and far-ranging, from photography and gardening to science and technology to history and music. He spent many evenings and weekends watching Star Trek, shopping, and attending concerts at The Kennedy Center. Ed also loved jogging along Sligo Creek Parkway and East-West Highway. He also enjoyed volunteering at various Smithsonian museums and for the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Shee Moi Choy and Mong Chong Choy, and his brother, Arthur Choy. He is survived by his daughter, Beth Choy; his daughter, Sarah Sewell; his brother, Alan Choy; his sister, Elaine Wong; his brother, Warren Choy; four grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues who will miss him.
A Celebration of Life was held in Ed's honor on October 11, 2025 at the Silverton Condominiums in Silver Spring, MD. An interment will be held at Hawaiian Memorial Park at a future date.
