Edward Glatthorn Obituary

Edward Richard Glatthorn, 90, died of natural causes in the early morning hours of June 28, 2024 in Vero Beach, Florida where he had lived for many years with his beloved wife Barbara.
Ed was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1933 to Edward and Mildred (née Reitz-Wehr) Glatthorn. He grew up in Philadelphia during the Second World War while his father was away at sea serving in the war for the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer Ordronaux in the Mediterranean. He had no siblings but had many aunts and uncles as both his parents came from large families of 12 children. He grew up within this large and caring family including innumerable cousins. He had particular fond memories of while as a young man of going to see several different up and coming famous jazz singers of the 1940s in the jazz joints of Wildwood, NJ. Later he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the U.S. Navy and became an electronics technician and afterwards worked many years in the Philadelphia Navy Yard before moving to Virginia in 1978 to work for The Department of the Navy. After retiring at 55, he moved to Florida to enjoy a life of leisure and world traveling with his wife Barbara. He was an avid reader, keeping up with current events, business, and economics. He was particularly interested in history and spent much time studying different things that drew his attention. He was very generous and sacrificial to providing for his family and his concern for their well-being was always his top priority and his legacy.
Ed is survived by his wife of 35 years; and four beloved children he was very proud of from a previous marriage: Darryl, Denise, Edward, and Diana who loved him and will miss him. Ed was delighted at having seven grandchildren and he was overjoyed to live long enough to see six great-grandchildren which he was extremely proud of.
Edward Richard Glatthorn will be buried at sea, just like his father was, at a date to be determined.
