DR. EDWARD J. SHERIDAN JR., M.D

Late in the evening of August 15, 2022, Dr Ed Sheridan Jr, M.D. with his family at his bedside, passed away peacefully in Annapolis MD at the age of 90. Ed Sheridan was born at the Bronx Municipal Hospital (Jacobi Medical Center) in the Bronx, NY on March 1st, 1932, narrowly avoiding being a leap year baby by a few hours. The oldest of four children, his early childhood years during The Depression were spread across New York City, the Hudson Valley, and Buffalo before his parents settled in Alexandria Virginia. He met his future wife Ann Holt on Bashford Lane. He later attended George Washington High School graduating as the Colonel of the Cadet Corp at the age of 16 in 1948. He was a daily commuter to Georgetown University. While on the hilltop he boxed for Marty Gallagher's boxing team. He graduated in 1952 and attended the University of Virginia Medical School where he began his training to become a psychiatrist. Ed and Ann married in the Fall of 1957 and began a series of multi city moves in support of Ed's development as an adolescent psychiatrist. He and Ann welcomed daughter Liz in 1958 and son Ted in 1964. Both kids were born in DC but during those years Ed and Ann moved to Detroit for residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital, back to DC for an extended residency at St. Elizabeth's, Ann Arbor for an internship, followed by two years living in San Francisco and working at the Oakland Naval Hospital where he served as both a Psychiatrist and LCDR in the U.S. Navy. Ed and Ann returned to DC in 1963 and remained there throughout their lives. After Dr Sheridan completed a Children's National Medical Center/ George Washington University Fellowship, he established his psychiatric practice specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. He devoted himself to his patients and the community for 54 years. He was on the faculty of the medical schools of both Georgetown and George Washington Universities. He loved teaching patient interviewing, bed side in the hospital, to first year medical students. He was a perpetual attendee at Georgetown University Hospital Grand Rounds, one of his very favorite activities. He was active in psychoanalytic societies in DC and supported training of psychoanalysts. He served as advisor and board member for several institutions including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington Hospice Center and Crossing Place. In his later years he worked at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington. He was an avid runner, completing 26 Marine Corp Marathons, one New York City Marathon, one JFK 50 Miler on the C&O Canal, and a number of 10K's. He loved golfing at Rock Creek Park and meeting people from all walks of life. He and Ann were long time members of St. Mary Mother of God Parish on 5th St NW where they helped run the after Mass social hour. He was a daily communicant throughout his life. In addition to the many social gatherings they held, for almost 50 years Dr Sheridan and Ann hosted Christmas Eve caroling on the wide porch of their Crestwood home. Everyone was welcomed with cider, cookies, singing and a visit from Santa. Ann predeceased Ed in the fall of 2021. Ed is survived by his two children Liz Martinez (James) of Annapolis, MD and Ted Sheridan (Liz) of Davis, CA. Pop, Pop, Pop leaves six grandchildren; Kelsey (Ryan), Molly, Trevor, Samantha, Kathleen, Charlie and two great grandsons; Henry and Watson. His funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 17 at the Basilica of St. Mary in Old Town Alexandria.
