EDWIN HARPER. Obituary

EDWIN TAYLOR HARPER "Buddy"
Of Citrus Hills, FL passed away on the evening of January 28, 2015, at the age of 67, after a nine year battle with cancer; while being attended by family and staff members at the Gardens at Fair Oaks Assisted Living Facility, in Fairfax, VA. Ed was born in Baltimore City, MD on February 13th, 1947 and grew up in Front Royal, VA. He was the second child, and first son, of Sara Irene Taylor Harper and Edwin Higgins Harper. He completed his early education at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, VA and Christchurch School in Christchurch, VA (class of 1965), followed by his studies, in Engineering at Virginia Tech. In the 70's, he moved to Northern Virginia and began his 35 year career as an Insurance Agent, with Allstate Insurance Company. Ed built his business from the ground up, in Reston, VA, attaining Allstate's Honor Ring and Inner Circle Awards. Ed was Charismatic with a capital "C', he was known as much for his charming dimpled smile, as he was for his sociable nature and sense of humor. In addition to his dedication to his family, and his business, he lived and breathed golf and was a fierce competitor and valued partner. He made many long putts and longer friendships on and off the course. In 2012, Ed retired from Allstate and fulfilled his longtime goal to escape cold winters by moving to the warm weather of Florida. Though he only lived a couple of years in Citrus Hills, FL, Ed ingrained himself in his new community and was a fast friend, caring neighbor and bridge partner. His humorous and loving presence will be as sorely missed by the many people whose lives were touched by his. Ed is survived by his daughter, Alicia Harper Macleod and son-in-law, Andrew Harley Macleod, of South Riding, VA; brother, James A. Harper of Rockland, VA and a sister, Linda Harper Marlow of Gainesville, VA. He is predeceased by his parents, Sara Irene Taylor Harper and Edwin Higgins Harper. A memorial will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA on Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Internment will immediately follow the memorial, at Fairfax Memorial Park, on site. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Capital Caring Hospice, online or at 703-531-2380.

I am so sad to hear this news. I had no idea. Our families were friends and Buddy was always such a good guy and so very handsome. I know that his family will miss him terribly. Many of the good people leave much too soon but God has a plan, often it is difficult to understand.

I haven't seen Buddy since we were growing up. Buddy, Barry Bryant and I were the 3 amigos. I remember so well all the many days we played home run derby in his drive way, Buddy was a dear friend growing up on 14th and 15th streets.

We shared many laughs and good times while with Allstate a long time ago. Your zest for life and fun was admirable.

Rest in Peace my dear friend, it was 20 years ago this month that we first met. You were a great friend and a wonderful boss. You will be missed so much.
