BURKA In Loving Memory ELLIOTT LEWIS BURKA May 6, 1940 ~ September 4, 2013 ELLIOTT LEWIS BURKA of Great Falls, VA, a leading and dedicated investor and leader of the northern Virginia apartment industry, will mark his one year passing from this life on September 4, 2013. He was a dedicated leader in the apartment and real estate industry who was recognized by many groups, including the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization. "Elliott Burka was one of our founding members, our strongest and most influential supporter and longest serving member of our board," said the group's president, Juliet Hiznay. "There is hardly any aspect of our community's remarkable advancements that is not related to his leadership and guidance essential for the revitalization of Columbia Pike over more than three decades. We will always remember him for his pragmatic, result-oriented, yet visionary spirit and are very grateful for his many contributions and the critical support he provided." He served four terms as president of the Northern Virginia Apartment Association, which honored him at its Founders Awards with a posthumous Distinguished Service Award. He was appointed to the Arlington Board of Supervisors to serve on the Arlington County Tenant and Landlord Commission, on which he served from 1987 to 2006, and appointed by the same body to the Economic Development Commission, on which he served from 1999 to 2009. Mr. Burka was owner and managing general partner of numerous residential and commercial rental properties, including the Fillmore Gardens Apartments in Arlington and the Lloyd Apartments in Alexandria. He was the builder of the Burkland Medical Office Building in Wheaton, MD; the Hastings Condominium, The Remington and McArthur Park in Washington, DC. Mr. Burka served in the U.S. Air Force and was an initial board member of the Americans in Wartime Museum, dedicated to honoring those who have served in all branches of the United States military and on the home front, from World War I to the present. He graduated from Milford Academy and the University of Miami, where he earned a degree in music specializing in the trumpet. While attending the university, he worked as an accomplished diver for the Miami Seaquarium. He was widely known as a renowned collector of fine antique weapons. Born and raised in the District of Columbia, Mr. Burka is survived by his beloved wife, Christine Teo Burka; daughters, Asia Burka and Stacy Burka; a son, Eric (Kristen) Burka; and grandchildren, Lily, Ava and Maxwell.
