Eugene Montague Obituary

MONTAGUE Eugene Montague "Gene" Was born on July 11, 1964 in Brooklyn, NY. Gene passed away on May 22, 2016 in the excitement and adrenalin of doing what he loved to do - staying fit while participating in a competitive physical activity. Gene attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School in Brooklyn, NY and Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, an all-male Roman Catholic school in Brooklyn graduating in 1982. While in high school, Gene participated on the track team and his interest in joining the armed services began to grow. He would later graduate from the City University of New York with a Bachelor''s in Psychology, having participated in the ROTC program and becoming an Army Reserve Officer. Gene earned a Master''s of Science degree in Business Administration and Management from Central Michigan University. In 1989 he began studying Sanuces Ryu, a form of Jitsu, and for the next 27 years would grow in this system. Gene would earn the title of Shihan (Master Teacher) and rise to the rank of 6th Degree Black Belt. In 1987, while completing undergraduate study, Gene joined Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Gene would enter his fraternity back-to-back with his five line brothers; together the Sagacious Six Sons of Destiny would spend the next 29 years as part of a brotherhood that transcends blood. Gene joined the NYPD in 1990. During his tenure he worked for the 88th Precinct in Fort Green, Brooklyn, the 28th Precinct in Harlem and the 34th Precinct in Washington Heights. He later became an instructor at the Police Academy before eventually going to the 83rd Precinct in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where he retired in 1997 from injuries sustained in the line of duty. Gene began his military career in 1988, completing the Infantry Officer Basic Course. He would spend the next 28 years in a host of positions from New York and Germany to serving in combat zones in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Most recently, Gene was the Deputy G-3/5/7 for the Office of the Chief Army Reserve in Ft. Belvoir, VA. Gene is a decorated officer, having received numerous decorations and badges; the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with four OLCs, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award with two OLC, the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation and Army Superior Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star Device, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Star Device, the Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star Device, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the NATO Medal with Bronze Service Star Device (Kosovo Operations and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan), the Expert Infantryman''s Badge, the Basic Parachutist Badge, Honduran Airborne Wings and German Parachutist Badge (Bronze), the Joint Staff Identification Badge and Army Staff Identification Badge. Gene met the love of his life, Lissette and they married in 1994. For the next 23 years, they would build a life of love and friendship together. From this union, they would have three incredible children, Aminah, Ahmad and Aza; joined by their older brother Eugene III. Gene leaves behind to cherish his loving family, parents, Marianna and William Porter; brother Rashid (Nasir); step-sister Carole; other brothers and sisters; father and mother-in-law, Nick and Amalia Ali; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Woodbridge, VA on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 and Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Triangle, VA. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Woodbridge, VA on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 and Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Triangle, VA. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
