Gene is well known for his investment acumen and his mentoring of me and others was surely the great luck and highlights of our careers. His analytical abilities and prodigious memory were beyond any I have ever seen since.
Here's another side of him:
He and Mike N. came to my 70th birthday party. I live in the mountains of Va. - a bit of a trip for them.
They came upstairs and Gene spotted our piano. Most of you readers know that a piano was like a magnet for Gene. He made a beeline to it and played several really nice pieces.
My wife went over and apologized that the piano was a bit out of tune.
The following Wednesday I get a call from a Brandon saying he was calling to schedule a piano tuning. I said it must have been requested by my wife. He responded with, "No it was requested and paid for by a Mr. Mulligan."
Ever since, whenever we need a retuning we look at each other and say "we need to call Gene " !
Gene will be greatly missed.

I had the privilege of working with Gene for 2 years at ASB in the 80s and informally for many years after. Gene's desire to keep learning and improving his skills lasted a lifetime.

Gene was a highly valued member of our Piano at Peabody group, where he shared his amazing talent with us, always polished and expertly executed. He was an inspiration! I had the good fortune to be at his 90th birthday recital where I met gracious Dorothy. Was it at that recital, or at another time, where I heard him play a duet with his son? He came to Peabody a couple years ago, just after Dorothy had passed. We were all delighted to be with him, but unfortunately he had to leave early due to a covid concern. My condolences to his family. What a lovely man!
