EUGENE L. THOMAS JR.
Eugene L. Thomas Jr, 73, of Gaithersburg, Maryland departed this life on February 7, 2023, surrounded by family at his home. He was born on May 6, 1949, in Carlisle, PA. The son of the late Eugene L. and Kathleen Thomas, he was a Vietnam Veteran who spent 20 years in the military and reached the rank on Master Sergeant. While in the military, he attended the Southern Illinois University with a degree in Healthcare Management. He then went on to work another 21 years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as the Senior Administrator for the Department of Medicine.
Eugene was a quiet spirit who was known for being funny and kept his family laughing all the time. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Loretta M. (Owens) Thomas, daughter Nicole M. Thomas of Washington D.C., and son Eugene L. Thomas, III (his wife Rachel and granddaughter Maya) of Washington, D.C. Additionally, Eugene is survived by his brother Mark Thomas (wife Margie ) from Burlington, New Jersey, sister Myre Yarbrough (husband Clarence ) of Gaithersburg Maryland, and Cathy Thomas of Carlisle, PA.
His viewing will be at the Snowden Funeral Home in Rockville, MD on February 18 between 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the service will be private. It was Eugene's wish that in lieu of flowers, a donation would be made in his memory to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society (https://www.lls.org/ [lls.org]).
He will be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Gene was a great administrator and made great contributions to the care and smooth running of the Deptof Medicine at Walter Reed. Miss him.

Gene was the senior administrator for the Department of Medicine at the "old" Walter Reed. I had the privilege of working closely with him for most of my military career. His wise counsel and levelheaded approach to administrative problems kept us and the Department on track. More than that, his kindness, tolerance and friendship provided mentorship for many young physicians as well as for the more experienced staff. We are all saddened by his passing. Our prayers are with him and his family.
