FRANCIS DuVAL Obituary

FRANCIS JOSEPH DuVAL "Frank"
Of Frederick, Maryland, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021 with family by his side in the home of his friends, Mike Davis and Laura McClure. He was born to Hélene Cau DuVal and T.E. (Ted) DuVal of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, in 1945. He received a B.A. in Art from The Catholic University of America where he achieved record-breaking titles in free-style and butterfly swimming events. Frank followed his passion for art throughout his life, but was also employed in a part-time capacity for over 30 years by Williams Steel of Manassas, VA. After living in and around the DC area for nearly two decades Frank settled in Frederick, MD in 1986 and became involved in the Weinberg Center, the Frederick Arts Council and the Delaplaine Arts Center. His drawings, paintings and postcards featured a wide variety of subjects including jazz musicians, dancers, wildlife, masterworks, celebrities and lady golfers (commissioned by the LPGA). His work has been widely exhibited in over 25 solo shows since 1970 throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, North Carolina and Arkansas. He served as an artist-in-residence in the Badlands National Park in South Dakota and the Everglades Park in Florida. He is survived by his sister, Anne Quigley and husband Stephen of West Chester, PA; brother, John DuVal and wife Kay of Fayetteville, AR; by what Frank called his neblings, Carol Quigley of West Chester, PA, Niell DuVal and wife Anjana Padmanabhan of Washington, DC, Kathleen DuVal and husband Marty Smith of Durham, NC, Stephen Quigley and wife Michelle of Beaverdam, VA, and Mary Kay Arnold of Milton, FL; and six great-neblings. The joy he brought through his warm humor and wit will be missed by his family and his innumerable friends, with whom he continued to keep in touch through his personally-illustrated postcards for over five decades. A memorial gathering to honor Frank will be planned for late summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Frank DuVal to the Delaplaine Arts Center in Frederick, MD at https://delaplaine.org/support/memorials.

Frank and I met in our 20s...the CUA days & the Brookland crowd, The Tribe. We talked and laughed only recently. I have just placed two postcard art pieces, Punk Buffalo and Tallulah Bankhead in my new apartment, not knowing that my beloved friend had passed in February. I am now in Montana. And that Frank would surprise me with a phone call now and then to talk jazz or politics and we would laugh on the same page, as it were, was such an uplift to my own aging life. I shall miss him so very much. Always in my heart--Babalu

We called him Duv .
Frank was an art teacher at my high school , Seton , when I was a senior. He worked on the musical with us .
After Seton , we became friends . It was a group of us girls n Frank .
Myself and a couple others managed to keep in touch over the past 50 years . We always laughed like loons over our various life experiences .
I have always cherished my postcards as I will cherish him .
Fortunately , I caught a few of his shows in Frederick n met some of his close friends n his sister n I had fun talking on one occasion.
He will be greatly missed .
My sympathies to his family n close circle of friends .
Much love , Mary

I have know Frank since 1973 and was privileged to be a recipient of a number of his hand-drawn postcards, having received the latest one in December 2020. He was a clever, intelligent person with a quirky sense of humor, which often showed in his drawings and comments on those postcards. I will miss getting those but will treasure the collection I have and the memories they evoke of this dear man.

A cherished friend of my sister, Eileen, Frank was always sweet to her "kid sister" (me) and to the whole Mengers family who was based in suburban Philadelphia, not far from his roots. I enjoyed attending Frank's art exhibits in Pennsylvania and in D.C. His post card art had a place of honor on my parents' piano and made all of us smile, just as he did. My husband, David P. Kozinski (also an artist), and I extend our love and sympathy to Frank's biological and Catholic U. families.

Frank was a very dear and longtime friend. For years he drove us to the beach in the summer. I drove him before he had a car. I met him at the Arts Council. He said his alter ego was Raoul. That's what I called him and he called me Gracie (in house joke). I'll miss you my buddy. Thanks for all the memories of times and things shared. I'm still in shock, and will shed my tears at a later time. Gladys (Gracie)

Frank was a fixture in downtown Frederick. I could hear that laughter from a block away. We had many wonderful times together, especially with Tawn Stup as his closest companion. The postcards were always cherished. The art community will miss his wit and talent and I will miss him dearly.

I send my deepest sympathy and love of Frank's art to his family. He was a dear friend and always smiling. I truly appreciated his art style of painting and drawing. I'm including one gift and painting he did for me and is now hung in our home. God bless his extended family.
