FRANK DALLAS Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel FRANK J. DALLAS (Ret.)
Of Clifton, Virginia died peacefully while sleeping on Friday, January 13, 2017, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and other ailments. He was 92 years old. Frank John Dallas was born on November 25, 1924, at Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania. His father was a coal miner and he was the oldest of six children. While still in high school, he enlisted in the Army during World War II and fought in Italy, France, Belgium and Germany, where he was awarded both the Silver and Bronze Stars for valor in combat. Frank served over 26 years in the Army and also was in combat infantry units in both the Korea and Vietnam wars. As a young Captain, he completed Special Forces training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and remained in Special Forces throughout the rest of his Army career. After retiring from the Army, he worked as a draftsman and project designer for the Fayetteville City Engineer. He also enjoyed more time for his lifelong passions for hunting, fishing, woodworking, and square dancing. Frank is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Josephine (Jo) Tarone Dallas; son, Ed (Mary Jo); daughters, Nancy (Jim) and Patty (Ray); seven grandchildren who adored their Poppie; a brother, Dale; as well as, many nieces and nephews.  Lieutenant Colonel Dallas will be buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Frank's name at Saint Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 6720 Union Mill Road on Saturday, January 21 at 12 p.m. The family will host a reception following Mass for family and friends at their home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank's name to the Clifton Lions Club, PO Box 41, Clifton, Virginia 20124 or to Camp Hometown Heroes: (www.hometownheroes.org).

I happened to run across this photo/obituary of LTC. Frank and immediately recognized him as someone that I knew and admired as a young boy in the Sandhills of N.C. many, years ago. LTC Frank, then a Major, was the head cadre for the officer´s portion of the Gobbler Woods ftx which utilized a portion of our farm in 1962. I became a part of the "guerrilla" force and spent several days getting "trained" by the Special Forces team being mentored and graded by LTC. Frank. He basically gave me full access to the soldiers during the exercise including sleeping, eating and doing whatever that was safe for a 14 year old. I admired his character, demeanor and patience with me as I asked hundreds of questions on a daily basis. I had a great time that summer. So much, that when I got a few years older and my number was called for duty during the Vietnam war, I volunteered for Special Forces and ended up serving 20 years active and reserves with service in Vietnam 5th Special Forces and MACVSOG in 1970 and 71. I feel honored and privileged to have known such a great and honorable person. I never knew his background in the Regiment until today and I am humbled to have received from him a direction in life that defined who I am today. De oppresso liber RIP.

So sorry to learn of the passing of LTC Dallas. My family lived in the apartment above the Dallas family while stationed in Bad Tolz, Germany in the late 50's. Even though I was very young,I remember that he was always smiling and it made me smile too. Prayers to your family.

Nancy, Jim and the Dallas family: We heard from my Dad about the passing of LTC Dallas. I have many memories of seeing him around the house and yard in Cottonade. Every time I go by that house I tell whoever is with me that the house is the "Dallas House". Sorry for the loss and know the Hazlett family is with you. Uncle Frank was a wonderful person and did amazing things with his life. As a dedicated brave soldier he put his life on the line for his country often securing The safety of others before his own. He came from a wonderful warm family of six brothers and sisters. We are very proud of our uncle. May is kind, gentle soul rest in peace. May the Lord give strength to his family as they mourn his passing and may pleasant memories of a life well lived bring them comfort. Our deepest sympathies to our Aunt Jo, cousins Ed, Nancy and Patty and their families
