GEORGE BARCZAY Obituary

GEORGE BARCZAY (Age 76)
George Tibor Barczay, the son of Tibor and Eva (nee Havas) Barczay, died at his home in Reston, VA on June 23, 2021 after a courageous fight against Esophageal cancer. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he came to the US at age three with his family, refugees from communism, and grew up in central New Jersey, where he attended Pennington High School. He was devoted to his adoptive country and served in Vietnam as a Marine. During the battle of Khe Sanh, he was a radio operator on Hill 881 South for 113 days. He received the Navy Achievement Medal for "superior performance," including "outstanding leadership and composure under fire". He never forgot his fellow Marines who did not survive. In 1988, George married Katalin Barczay of Budapest. A graduate of Rutgers University (where he was in the Chi Phi fraternity), and of the Thunderbird School of Global Management, he held managerial positions at various firms in the US and abroad. His love of travel took him to numerous countries across five continents, and he also enjoyed going to the beach in Lewes, DE, skiing, and hiking. He was an avid reader of biographies and books on history. Spending time with family, friends, and his dog Pityke was especially important to him. He had a marvelous sense of humor and a quick wit that he maintained until the end. In addition to his wife Kati, George is deeply mourned by his daughters Sari Barczay and Nora Barczay (Maxwell Roland); sister, Eva Barczay (Stephen Miller); brother, Stephen Barczay; nieces Katherine Miller-Darras (Dimitri Darras) and Elizabeth Miller; great-nephews Theo, Alex, and Kieran; and numerous relatives and friends worldwide. According to his wishes, interment will be in Hungary.

George was one of the bravest men I know. He never mention Khe Sanh to anyone but he lived through hell on earth. Semper Fi ! I was proud to have known him,

George and I were Fraternity brothers in CHI PHI at Rutgers, in fact we were room mates in an apartment known as the Pad for a while. George "Hunkey", was the personification of the term "Joir de vivre" and a down to earth friend for the few years we were together at Chi Phi. I am saddened to find out that he has departed. It was only through the magic of a related Google search that I found out about his death this year.
