George Gardiner "Bud"
George Clarke "Bud" Gardiner, Sr., MD, 86, died on August 20, 2021, at MedStar Montgomery Hospital with his wife at his side. He was born in Bridgeport, CT on August 17, 1935, and was the younger son of William Orin Gardiner, Jr, DDS and Margaret Anne Clarke Gardiner. He was predeceased by his parents and by his older brother, William Orin Gardiner III. He grew up in Stratford, CT, resided in Philadelphia, PA for most of his adult life, and relocated to Collington Episcopal Life Care in Mitchellville, MD in 2017. Most recently, he was a resident of Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, VA. His first marriage, to Barbara Ruth Collins, with whom he had two children, ended in divorce. In 1976 he married Margarita (Rita) Hauser Calhoun.Bud attended Nichols Elementary School in Stratford, Fairfield College Preparatory School, Bates College, and Tufts University School of Medicine. He received his post-graduate medical training at Boston City Hospital and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Philadelphia. In 1976, he undertook residency training in Adult Psychiatry at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he served as Chief Resident and subsequently joined the faculty. He was proudest of his accomplishments in recruiting, retaining, and mentoring medical students and residents who were members of minority groups under-represented in medicine. He delighted in being "Grandpa" to Christopher and Saoirse Gardiner, Jonah Gilliam, and Jonathan and Jesse Calhoun, and "Gruncle" to Victoria and Austin Tirado. Bud was a senior wheN I was a freshman at Bates, I ended up buying his clarinet which I now passed on to my granddaughter, a very special memory. ..........

At Christmas holiday, I rode to CT with him when the front of the hood came up and smashed the windshield on the Maine Turnpike. There were six of us in the car. Bud stayed very calm , tied it down as best could be done and we made it ti Lynn MA, where he called someone. I ended up staying overnight with someone and taking a train to Stamford. I have very fond memories of Bud even though we totally lost contact over the years.

A very special person@!

We were privileged to meet Bud and Rita in 2018 on a cruise, where we bonded over a love of dogs and having used the same "dog retreat" the same morning we met enroute to our pre-cruise hotel. We will treasure our memories of Bud´s humor, his skill with a fast quip and his wealth of life stories. As two veterans, we are particularly grateful for Bud´s work with the VA and the heart for service to the community he showed every day. We send our love, sympathy, prayers and big "Rita hugs" to Rita and to their families. Bud´s was a life well lived, a man with many gifts who clearly gave back to his family and community. He will not be forgotten. Rita, we will see you soon, and look forward to hearing stories of Bud over the coming years of the man we wish could have stayed with us all longer. Our most loving condolences on the sudden loss of such a special man, Dave and MJ
