George Leftwich Obituary

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, of West Orange, NJ. Beloved husband of the late Mary Natalie Leftwich; father of George, Jr. and Brian (Kara) Leftwich; grandfather of Samantha and Eli; brother of Willie L. Leftwich and the late Ezalia Leftwich.
George was born in Washington, DC to the late Willie Lorenzo and Maude Ida Leftwich. As a youth in DC, George gained acclaim on the competitive playground basketball courts. Through this and his continued success in basketball at Archbishop Carroll High School and Villanova University, George forged lifelong meaningful friendships both on and off the court. He had a unique way of quietly connecting with everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
He continued to touch lives as he worked as a coach, educator and athletic director in the D.C. Metropolitan area including Archbishop Carroll High School, Sidwell Friends, Gwynn Park and UDC. George also actively mentored and coached his own sons, George, Jr. and Brian. He was inducted into several basketball Hall of Fames including the Washington Metropolitan Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He will be dearly missed.
As a fun-loving family man, George will be remembered for his enjoyment in bringing family together for gatherings and holidays, as well as creating plentiful custom-made tee shirts, cups and keychains to commemorate each occasion. George spent the last four and a half years living in New Jersey, close to his grandchildren, and enjoyed attending their sporting events regularly. This time will be cherished forever.
Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), on Wednesday, July 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and then at St. John the Baptist Church, 12319 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, on Thursday, July 3 starting at 10 a.m. where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery at 1 p.m.

George was a joy to watch as he triggered the start of Carroll's amazing game winning streak. Even better person later in life. Wrote about George and the team for the old Washington Star. There are few left who realize the greatness of the teams that included George, John Thompson, Tom Hoover, Monk Meloy and John Austin. Take my word for it, they were the real deal. I think I saw aad wrote about almost every one of the games that were played locally. Coch Bob Dwyer put together a great team. George was a class act!

I had the pleasure playing on the same team at John Carroll with George. I was happy to be on the same team with a gentleman and an unbelievable basketball champion. God bless him.

I had the pleasure to play for Coach Leftwich at Archbishop Carroll H. S. Coach Leftwich taught me how to play and win basketball games but most importantly he taught me about life. He led me to College and then encourage me to attend graduate school. I decided to attend graduate school when he told me we could be in class together. REST IN PEACE Coach Leftwich you will be missed.

I had the pleasure of playing basketball with George at Banneker Junior High. Then the pleasure of beating George in 1958 when his Archbishop Carroll team lost to my Cardozo team in the City Championship game at Uline Arena. But George got his revenge the following year when Archbishop Carroll went on a 54-game winning streak including the win (a drubbing according to the press) over Cardozo in the City Championship game played in Cole Field House at the University of Maryland. He was a great player and a great man. I will cherish fond memories of George as a teammate and friend. May he rest in peace.

In whatever capacity I ran into George over the last nearly 60 years (opposing coach, referee, timekeeper, summer league czar) there was always a big smile on his face...this world has lost a special guy...RIP coach!

my condolences to his family. I was fortunate enough to have played for George in his early years at Carroll 69-71. George was an outstanding teacher and leader whose lessons were not only helpful on the court but in life off the court. I proudly admit that I was one of many that lost to George in one on one (George allowed his players in those early years to challenge him ONCE) . George also taught me if you needed to merge in traffic, pick on a real expensive car - they had more to lose. George had a great fire for competition when he played and coached but also had a great sense of humor. he will be missed

He was my Sociology teacher at Carroll and coached our JV Basketball team for one game. It was an honor be in his presence during those times. Condolences to his family, former teammates and students, May he rest in glory!
