George Michael Obituary

WASHINGTON (AP) — George Michael, a mainstay on the Washington, D.C., sports television scene for decades who reached a national audience with "The George Michael Sports Machine" highlights show, has died. He was 70 years old.

Michael's daughter, Michelle Allen, said Michael died Thursday morning from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia at Sibley Memorial Hospital.

In a statement, WRC TV in Washington, where Michael had been a sports director, called him a pioneer in sports broadcasting. His show, which began as a late-night local feature, ran from 1980 to 2007. The trendsetting program became the first nationally syndicated sports highlights show in 1984 and was eventually broadcast in 194 markets across the United States and in 10 foreign countries.

Michael's family says plans for a memorial service are not yet complete.

For George...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

What a huge lose! Every time George delivered the Sports, he made you fell he was just talking to You and only You. He was such a hard charger with so much character that it was impossible not to enjoy George. He also knew the benefits of pushing people that worked for him to be the best. He loved animals of all types and I have great memories of his reports on Dogs, Horses, Bulls and all the other creatures he loved. He is and always will be the best! God Bless you George and Rest in Peace.

George Michael was an integral part to the team at WRC4 and a true pioneer in sports broadcasting. I still have fond memories of him showing wrestling highlights when I was a kid. He captured the Redskins wonderfully during their glory years and Super Bowls. In college, although away from the Washington area, I could still catch him and his fantastic highlights on the Sports Machine. Thanks for the memories, he will be missed. George Michael was the ultimate sportscaster. My family watched the news on channel 4 specifically to see Jim Vance as anchor and George Michael as sportscaster. Our prayers go out to his family, both personal and professional.

January 4, 2010

I first started to watch George Michael's Sports Machine while I was stationed overseas. My friends and I would get together on a daily basis to hear about all of the sports news from the only true reliable source. When I came to the DC area, I loved watching Mr. Michaels interaction with Jim Vance, Doreen Gensler, Sonny Jurgenson and Joe Bugle. My heart and prayers go out to the Michael Family and to his friends, especially Jim Vance, who enjoyed talking to George on the air and after they were off of the air. We have lost a man, friend and the ultimate in sports Journalism. Rest In Peace Mr. Michael, we will always remember you!

The weekend wasn't over until George Michael entertained and enlightened us with the true character and best shots of the games across America. The Michael family and family of friends, which includes millions of us across America, has suffered a great loss. Others will entertain and enlighten us but not like George Michael did. Getting the scoop from George was analogous to watching the Babe hitting a homer. Others may drive them out of the park, but none will do it like George did. God Bless George. God Bless you. We've all been blessed by George Michael. Billy Drozda, Valparaiso, Indiana.

WFIL-AM and the Boss Jocks at Triangle Station's AM-FM-TV Round House on City Line Avenue, Bala Cynwyd/ Philadelphia. From '68-72, I had a ball earning a salary while working with George Michael, Dr. Don Rose, The Daver, Long John, The Cooker, JJJeffrey, Dickie H., Jim O'Brien, Lee Sherwood, and Jack, Doerte, Mary Ann, Harriet, the engineers and Sales. George, unique hair style, long legs and white teeth smile, would stride in before his 6PM M-F show, greet all by name, check the status on promotions & contests, update me on what high schools he had, and would next, visit, passionately talk up individual student and high school successes, and yes, he would plan plan plan for future events to visit them. George CARED about sports and the inherent life lessons that kids could learn from them. He would get Tom K to drive that orange Prize patrol to add pizzazz to a school event. He called me "Newt" or "Deb," he ALWAYS said Thank You and he ALWAYS spoke proudly of his family, then in Cherry Hill. He moved on to WABC in New York where we had last visit. I remain, these 40 (eek) years later, enriched by our friendship. A powerful space that he filled with that high energy, tenacity, smarts, judgment, laughter, outrageousness and kindness is left empty. I will honor your birthday in March, my friend.

May the Michael family take comfort in knowing that he is resting comfortably in the mansion built for him in Heaven. He is free of all pain and suffering and has that million dollar smile on his face!

Mr. Michael will be truly missed not only by his family but the millions upon millions of fans he had throughout the country. I can remember trying to stay awake on Sunday nights to watch the Sports Machine, waiting for 6:45 p.m. to listen to him tell us about the Redskins.

May God embrace the Michael family and comfort them during their time of bereavement.

To the family of George Michael: He was the sportcaster for our entire family---one we loved to watch and listen to. I will never forget going to a Touchdown dinner and asking my son Ryan which sports figure I could get an autograph for him. His reply was quick when he said, "The only autograph I want Mom is George Michael's." I said are you sure, there is lots of football players that will be there, he said no Mom, just bring me George Michael's. My son was about 12 at the time. Well, I asked Mr. Michael for his autograph and he was so happy to do it but had to borrow my pen, when he turned around to give me my pen back, he had a line of people who wanted his autograph. He continued to use my pen. He was the same person off camera as the person we had grown to love on camera. He will be greatly missed. All of you have our love and prayers

I was out of town and took a break from Christmas festivities to check the news on-line and I was just stunned. My family and I (those who were over the age of 10) just spoke about how much we loved his show. He never knew us, but he was at our table for dinner nearly every night that he had a sports cast. He was there with us during the great days of the Redskins, I remember him giving Art Monk something to do when Art broke a bone and couldn't play in the Superbowl. I met him once, in 1980, and I told him how much my family enjoyed his show. I am sure he had this happen often, but he stopped and gave me his attention. And we are just strangers and I am still stunned. I hope his family reads a lot from unknown people like me to realize we feel a loss and that this small thought might comfort them

George was such a huge icon in sports broadcasting. He covered it all. I couldn't wait for the 'sports machine'.What was most impressive was that he did his homework. Names were correct. He made sure the story was straight before he took it to the airwaves. Although I never personally knew him, he came across as genuine, honest, and loved his work. I can only assume he was the same way in his personal life. May God comfort you all in your time of loss and sorrow, and accept my deepest thanks for sharing a small part of him with us. When your father started his show I was becoming less interested in sports ,then when I was younger. However, by having the high lights and the meat of each story featrured on his show I became interested again. He showed me that a passing interest still made you a sports fann.
He was a "great" sportscaster, his enthusiasm was infectious, My condolences to your family.

To the Michaels Family - I remember George Michaels when he was part of the "Boss Jocks" of WFIL radio in Philadelphia, PA back in the mid to late 1960s and early 1970s. They were the "cream of the crop" - some of the best DJs our area (the Delaware Valley) ever had (the beloved late Jim O'Brien of station WPVI was also part of those "guys"); I also remembered George as the DJ for dances at BEPS in Pennsauken, NJ - many, many happy memories of George. "Thank you George for those happy memories!" God Bless him and his family!!! Sincerely, Donna Laird

Remember him replacing Cousin Bruce Morrow on WABC in the 70 s. Had a good radio voice too.
