Guy Toscano Obituary

Toscano

Guy Antonio Toscano

On Tuesday, November 28, 2023, our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend died at home in Lorton, VA. Born on January 17, 1944, in Antillo, Sicily, Italy, Guy immigrated to the United States as a child, grew up in Washington, DC, graduated from Anacostia High School, and received his BA in Economics from the University of Maryland. After graduating college, Guy served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany and Italy. He worked for the Federal Government for over 30 years as an economist with the US Census Bureau and the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. In retirement, Guy continued to have a full and adventurous life and loved hiking and gardening. His fig trees were a marvel to visitors, and he shared the figs with friends and family.

Guy remained close with his sizable family residing in Sicily and the United States. He is survived by his wife of 50+ years, Rita Cahill Toscano; his twin daughters, Pauline Toscano Lancaster (Robert), Jeannette Cahill Domask (Dean); his son, Aaron Antonio Toscano; and his grandchildren, Mya and Sasha Domask, Hayden and Bridget Lancaster. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, and details will be posted on his Facebook profile. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to any non-profit of your choice in honor of Guy's memory.

I just learned of Guy's passing to the Eternal Hiking Grounds. I'm so saddened by the news. I met Guy on hikes through our hiking club about 10 years ago. Then we became hiking buddies on our own, and I always enjoyed our forays (and the gifts from his garden). When I became a hike leader, he occasionally came on my hikes, the most recent in July 2021. I could always count on him to be helpful to others on the hikes. I will truly miss seeing his cheerful smiles. Enjoy the wide open space, my friend!

I knew Guy from hiking. He was a force of nature with his boundless energy and enthusiasm. He made others feel special, bestowing gifts from his garden, life stories, financial wisdom and genuine caring. I will miss him very much. He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I met Guy at one of the hiking groups in Virginia and while I was shy, he was there to break the ice and make me feel comfortable. I went to multiple events and always tried to go to the event that Guy planned to come to, and I enjoyed the conversation. He taught me a lot, and I always enjoyed listening to his garden story and checking whether he made it 20 miles/week goal. I used to bring a big camera with me for hiking, and he always talked (in a good way) about my camera skill :) I haven't gone out hiking since 2017 because of my schedule, but he sent friendly messages from time to time, and even the last time we talked was back in 2022, he still remembered everything we talked. I meant to join or go another hiking with him someday but...:(

Guy, thank you so much for all you taught me and you are the best (hiking) friend I've ever met. I will miss you all and rest in peace.

Most people knew him as Guy. My nickname for him was Gato. I will miss my dear friend, traveler, gardener. He was an example of how life needs to be lived. With passion, compassion, adventure, love of family, friends, animals and Mother Earth. I have priceless memories of walks, talks, digging in the dirt and good old fashion friendship with him. My deepest condolences to Rita and the entire Toscano family here in the States and Sicily (many of them I met when I went over the pond with him and Dominic). I will honor him with a special place in my garden with a hand carved stone he made for me with name on it. He gave it me over 28 years ago on my 50th birthday. I will continue to pickle eggplant and harvest Sicilian oregano in his honor. Journey on my friend...

I was on several hikes with Guy. He was a carefree and enjoyable person. We spent many hours talking about his family here in the United States and Sicily. Guy lived the sweet life, La Dolce Vita. I'll miss him.

Guy and I were good friends throughout high school and college. Afterward, we didn´t get together as much as we would like, but when we did it was just as if we had seen each other the previous day. I was honored when he asked me to be the best man at his wedding to Rita. I got to meet a lot of his family and quickly realized Guy had the same easy-going, friendly personality as they did.

We all know Guy was a fun-loving person, who always had some type of scheme going. I remember in high school he asked me to join the Spanish Club with him. I asked him why he wanted to join even though he didn´t like taking Spanish. His reply was the club has a lot of nice looking girls! Guy is going to be sorely missed, he was one of kind. RIP my friend.

I met Guy in 1978, when I came to his office for a job interview in the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was a job as a " Social Science Research Analyst" in an office with many Economists and Statisticians, working on the employment statistics. (I was an English major.) apparently, Guy saw potential in me and hired me. I found out later that he had only one job opening that was actually slated for college student due to graduate, who had been working there every summer. Apparently, he went to HR and requested a second position so he could hire me. (He told me that years later. During the interview, he asked me several questions about my previous career as a 2nd grade teacher, as his twin girls were in 2nd grade at the time. Guy was a very interesting person and he had a great personality and sense of humor. I was a mere GS-05 when I worked with him. Within a year, I moved on to another position that didn´t involve math and statistics but, we kept in touch. Years later, when I rose to become a GS-14 supervisor, Guy appreciated my remembering the opportunity he gave to me many years before.

Guy was a kind and caring person and he will be missed by many. He touched many lives. May he Rest in Peace.

Very Sad news in hearing about Guy. We met Guy recently on an Alaskan cruise and he was a special person who was full of life. Our regrets extend to his immediate family and his many friends. Just the short time I was acquainted with Guy, I could tell he loved life, his family and his old classmates from high school. I feel sadness knowing his "good life" has ended. Rest in Peace! I met Guy in tenth grade at Anacostia High School. We quickly became friends and remained friends until he passed away. His warm personality, passion for life and his positive outlook and sense of humor made him special. I enjoyed following Guy on Facebook seeing all of his hikes and adventures. Guy will be missed and remembered with love always.

I met Guy through his friendship with my husband, Bob Ward. Bob and Guy became instant friends when he arrived in America on Naylor Rosd. Bob would take credit for teaching him English and how to play Cowboy and Indians, always laughing he made Guy be Tonto. Bob passed away just 49 days before Guy on October 12th. They remained friends and in touch for close to 72 years.
I have so many great memories of their times spent together. I have no doubt Bob was waiting for Guy at the gates of Heaven. He was just such a wonderful friend to anyone he met along his path in life. I love the picture that was chosen, it shows me his love of nature and life. His family have my sincere condolences.

Heartfelt condolences going out to Guy´s family and many friends. We recently met Guy on an Alaskan cruise where his true love for his family and his many talents were displayed. He showed a smile and enjoyed a good joke with laughter is what I remember most. It´s a lost to many but remember the memories of a man who knew what a "good life" meant.

I met Guy about ten years ago on a hike I was leading for the Northern Virginia Hiking Club. He quickly became a regular hiker in the club and I always enjoyed his company. Guy was always happy and smiling whenever you saw him, someone who would uplift your spirit. I was deeply sorry to hear of his sudden passing! His presence will be missed.

Guy was my friend for over 40 years at work and outside of work. At BLS, he was the leading advocate for expanding and improving the Federal Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries Program in the states. He also published numerous articles dealing with these issues and was a frequent invited speaker at worker safety conferences. For these efforts, he received numerous awards and national recognition as an expert in this field.

Outside of work, Guy was also a great DIYer-- decks, patios, basements, and building his own villa at Cape Leonard. He was also a Master Gardener; hiking enthusiast; tax-filing counselor for AARP; high school reunion planner; coach for his kid's sport's teams; and, generally helping other people accomplish difficult tasks. He would describe these things as we walked every day during lunch at work and later on hikes after we both retired. During this time, I learned the most important thing in his life was his family and how much he loved them. I feel like I grew up with Pauline, Jeannette, and Aaron (and later his grandchildren (Hayden, Bridget, Mya, and Sasha) as he loved to talk about their lives and adventures, particularly those at the villa. He was proud of all of you and your accomplishments.

Guy was a unique individual and I was lucky to have known him as his continuing message in life was to help other people. Today's world needs more people like him . Rest in peace my friend.

Knew Guy since HS days. He always spoke lovingly and proudly about his family from Rita and his children--Pauline, Jeanette, Aaron--to his beloved grandchildren. Since he loved hiking in the woods and planting and was proud of his fig tree--in his memory trees will be planted. For a wonderful soul, my sincere condolences to his family.

I was lucky enough to be hired by Guy for my first job out of college at the BLS. I've had many "bosses" since, but none measured up to Guy. He treated his staff to summer picnics at his house with those famous figs and crabbing off of the dock. Those were the best times.

I met Guy in 1963 while at AHS, we were on the same football team. Guy was a senior and I was a sophomore, he kind of took me under his wing. I would see Guy from time to time at AHS reunion. he was one of a kind and the real deal.

I was lucky enough to work for him at BLS very early in my career. I'll remember with fondness our summer picnics where he loved to place crabs to sleep and place them on staffs heads. Guy was such a dear man.
