Gwendoline Ammerman Obituary

Gwendoline Mary Ammerman, age 99, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, in Charleston, SC—just ten days shy of her 100th birthday. Born in London, England, in 1925, Gwen's life was a true adventure defined by service and intellect.

In 1941, at age 16, Gwen joined the Women's Royal Navy Service (WRNS) during the Blitz. She was assigned to Bletchley Park, where she contributed to the secretive mission of breaking the Enigma Code. Following the war, she served in Berlin before joining the British Foreign Office. While stationed in Ethiopia in 1953, she met her husband of 55 years, Jim Ammerman.

The couple's life together spanned the globe, with Gwen working at The World Bank in Washington, DC, and later hosting international events as a diplomat's wife in Paris and London. A celebrated hostess, she was known for her lively conversation regarding world events and culture. In 2007, they moved to Mount Pleasant, SC, to be near their family.

Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 2011. She is survived by her children, Walter J. Ammerman (Ann) and Kathleen V. Savage (Henry); her grandchildren, Charlotte and Will Savage; and her great-grandchildren, Lily and Arlo. Her life was celebrated privately by her family.

Walter:
Sorry to read of the death of your mother; however, she certainly had an interesting life and extraordinary career of which you may be justly proud!
As I have visited Kiawah many times, the Charleston area should have been an enjoyable retirement area for her.
May she rest in peace.
