HAROLD PASSES Obituary


Dr. HAROLD I. PASSES  
Dr. Harold I Passes, 87 of Bethesda, MD died on Monday, October 8, 2012 Born in London, England on January 27, 1925, he was the son of the late Maurice and Hannah Passes. Educated in London, Harold arrived in the U.S. in 1950 to do his residency at St. Johns Riverside Hospital in New York and moved to Bethesda in 1954 where he lived for the next 58 years. From 1955-57, he was on active duty in the U.S. Navy Reserves as Chief of Infectious and Pulmonary Diseases at Bethesda Naval Hospital. A recognized expert in Pulmonary Diseases, Harold was a Deputy Director of the Dept of Health, Education and Welfare where he brought attention to Black Lung disease. At the same time he was the Tuberculosis Control Officer for Montgomery County, MD where he instituted the practice of CPR training. After his retirement from the government he served as a staff physician for the FBI and DEA and in that role was on hand during the arrest of former Mayor Marion Barry. He was Chairman of Pulmonary Medicine for Sibley Hospital and consultant to the Heart Institute of NIH. He served on numerous Boards and was president of the Heart Association. Not one to retire, at the age of 75 he spent the winter in Fairbanks, Alaska as an ER doctor at Ft. Wainwright and many summers in Ocean City, MD as a physician at seasonal care centers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sybil Barr Passes; sister. Doris Barcan and son-in-law, John Bauer. He is survived by daughters, Diane Bauer and Jill Tillery (Tim); son, Gregory Passes (Sherilyn); grandchildren, Rebecca and Sam Tillery and Alexander Passes; sister, Rosalyn Pincus (Bernie); niece, Samantha Meadows (Steve), their children Matthew and Stephanie; former wife, Gaye Passes and step-daughter, Corey Denis. He will also be missed by many friends and extended family members. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.  Services and interment will be private. www.sagelfuneraldirection.com
