Harvey Wenick Obituary

Harvey Wenick, DDS, passed in his sleep on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda (Ewing), his brother, Bob Wenick, his son, Dean Wenick, his daughter, Alyson Wenick Katz, and his beloved grandchildren, Zoe and Jacob Katz.

Harvey was born November 11, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After service in the US Army, he practiced dentistry in Alexandria, Virginia, for nearly 40 years. In his retirement, he proudly led a group of partners in a Lorton, Virginia, real estate development project.

While successful in business, Harvey's true passions were baseball, horse racing, and his family. He was a lifelong, full-throated fan of the New York Yankees who played college ball at William & Mary. He batted left and threw right for the Light Blue team of the Northern Virginia Senior Softball League until he was 85 years old.

Horse racing went a long way to fuel his passions for excitement, competition, gambling, and quantitative analysis. He loved to study the past performances of horses with the goal of picking winners. Win or lose, he got great joy from watching any race. Anyone he took to the track was treated to a tour of his favorite places — which included everything from the stables to the paddock to the clubhouse and, of course, the betting windows.

Dr. Wenick was very proud of his roots and nurtured true friendships from his youth throughout his life. Just this spring he traveled to the 70th reunion of his high school class. If asked how or why he was so committed after so much time and distance, he may very well have quoted Shakespeare and said "Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel."

A service was held on September 20, 2024, at Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria. A celebration of life will be forthcoming

I was a classmate of Harvey's at William & Mary, although I did not know him. However, I am sorry that I was not able to meet him, while we both lived in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Presently, I am the class reporter for the alumni magazine and would greatly hope that any family and friends contact me to add anything about his time as a student and as an alumnus. Photos also relating to him and the College. Thank you so much. [email protected]; (646) 234 3545.
