Henrietta Chapman Gwaltney

HENRIETTA CHAPMAN GWALTNEY

(Age 90). On Friday, October 12, 2001. Her parents were James Edwin Chapman and Henrietta Chadwick Ramsay. She was the widow of Julius Darden Gwaltney, who retired in 1971 as executive vice president of Gwaltney, Inc., where he served for more than forty-six years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, The United Methodist Women, the Ladies Sunday School Class and Maude Underwood Jordan Circle.

Mrs. Gwaltney was also a member of the Colonial Women, William Allen Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Isle of Wight Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She helped organize and served as the first president of The Junior Women's Club of Smithfield, VA, and was active in the Library Association. She was a member of the American Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Chrylser Museum in Norfolk and the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, FL.

Mrs. Gwaltney was a League Member of the Virginia Symphony in Norfolk and was instrumental in arranging concerts at Smithfield High School for the local children.

Some of the joint projects she and her husband supported in Smithfield were the restoration of the historic courthouse on Main Street; the restoration of Hayden's Lane; the establishment of a trust fund to be used for a variety of aesthetic improvements in the community so as to encourage business development in Historic Smithfield.

Mrs. Gwaltney is survived by two daughters, Henrietta Chapman Gwaltney, II of New York City and Florelle Darden Gwaltney of Kauai, Hawaii; three grandchildren, Christine Christian Bearden, Keith Gwaltney Christian and Noelle Monette Gauthier; her surviving siblings, Eddie Kay Willard and James Edwin Chapman, Jr.; and six great grandchildren, Katherine Bearden, Steven Bearden, William Bearden, Caroline Bearden, Cole Christian and Hanna Christian.

The family will receive all who wish to pay their respects at the home, 304 South Church Street, in Smithfield, VA, on Saturday, October 20, from 4 to 5 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Harry Spear and Rev. Bob Cofield at Trinity United Methodist Church, Cedar Street, in Smithfield, on Monday, October 22, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Smithfield.
