Henry James Wyatt, J.D., M.D., was born in Covington, GA to Lewis and Ruby Wyatt, the second of six children. He grew up in Cleveland, OH, attended school in the Cleveland Public School System and ran track and played baseball in junior high and high school. He was baptized at the Emmanuel Baptist Church where he was a member of the youth choir and the junior usher board.
Dr. Wyatt passed away quietly at home at age 85 after a long illness. He served as a chemist in the U.S. Army, stationed at Walter Reed Hospital (Washington, DC). He was a physician, first as a pathologist with the D.C. Medical Examiner's Office. He then served as Medical Director at Gallaudet University/Student Health Service (Washington, DC), Medical Director at the Wisconsin Avenue Nursing Home (Washington, DC) and Assistant Clinical Director for Research/Smith Kline Pharmaceutical (Philadelphia, PA). Subsequently he became a private practitioner, primarily in the Washington, DC area, for over 30 years, with medical licenses in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Georgia, before recently retiring to Tryon, NC. Dr. Wyatt was a graduate of Central State University, B.S., Chemistry [1961]; Howard University School of Law, J.D. [1968]; Howard University College of Medicine, M.D. [1972]; and was a candidate for a PhD in Nutrition, Howard University, College of Applied Sciences, Department of Nutrition.
He had numerous appointments, memberships, and other recognition, including Mayoral Appointee, Police and Firefighters' Retirement and Relief Board of the District of Columbia; Howard University Board of Trustees; Member: American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the Obesity Action Coalition, the Medico-Chirurgical Society of the District of Columbia and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He was a Past-President of The Mules (Washington, DC). He also was a long-term member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington, DC and served on its Vestry, and was a member of its choir before moving to Tryon, NC, where he became a member at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and a member of its "Saturday Singers" (choir).
He is survived by a devoted wife, Janice A. Booker Wyatt of Tryon, NC; a daughter, Sherri Lynn Wyatt, Esq. of Washington, DC; a son, Daryl Dominic Wyatt of Kansas City, MO; two grandchildren, Savanna Kai Wyatt, and Evan Dominic Wyatt of Kansas City, MO; two brothers, Lewis Wyatt, Jr., M.D. (Gail Wyatt, PhD) of Los Angeles, CA and Jeffrey Wyatt (Dolly Wyatt) of Mt. Vernon, NY; a sister, Ruby Diane Wyatt-Hammond, Esq. (Maurice D. Hammond, Sr.) of Adelphi, MD; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and other relatives. His parents, Lewis Wyatt, Sr., and Ruby Wyatt, a brother William Donald Wyatt, and a sister, Maria Antoinette Burroughs, predeceased him.
His Memorial Service will be held as follows:
