I met Howard back in 2001 - when he served as a substitute teacher for my English classes at Falls Church High School. I always knew that whenever he subbed for my classes, the students' work was always completed and my lesson plans would be carried out to the letter - not to mention, the reports that he left would be written in the most beautiful penmanship! Most of all, my students enjoyed seeing him - so much so that they would ask me when I was planning to be away, so that they could look forward to seeing him! Howard treated them as if they were his own students - with firm fairness and discipline, but also with much respect.
Our "teacher - sub" connection soon blossomed into a wonderful friendship - and once I met Bonnie, I looked forward to being around them as much as possible. Howard couldn't believe that I took the time to rent a car and visit the two of them in Florida about two years ago!
I will miss him dearly, but my memories of good laughs and wonderful conversations will be those that I keep close to my heart for years to come.
I can imagine him walking around Heaven - entertaining the masses with one of his original "literature raps."
Rest well, my friend - as you will no longer suffer pain.
Prayers to Bonnie and the family and friends that Howard leaves to mourn his passing.

I remember some of the wonderful days that Howard lived and rose to the class of 1950 at the former St. Leo Prep. School near Dade City, Fl. He then went on to the former St. Bernard College, Cullman, ALA. to enter into preliminary formation for the Benedictine Order (O.S.B.) Many years later I reconnected at an alumni reunion and with many mutual visits, especially in FL. we came to respect one another-though differing on some fundamental issues- we enjoyed the good times together. Eva and Bonnie left Howard with me on several occasions so they could have some free time and we could enjoy some conversations.
Howard was an exemplary human being with kindness, caring, and compassion. He not only pursued higher education but served in the Military Intelligence stationed in his beloved Paris. Bonnie was his great supporter not only as a mother but as a caregiver, teacher, specialist, and tour assistant. Howard lovingly spoke with pride of his sons and grandchildren. We enjoyed his renditions of rap and his ability to inquire about so many issues. We will miss him and hope that positive memories will live on with his family and friends.
