JAMES BYRNE Obituary

JAMES SEXTON BYRNE
A public policy journalist in Washington, DC for almost 50 years, was killed on November 1, 2017 when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing New Hampshire Avenue on his way to mass. Jim covered tax reform, economic development, banking, transportation policy, and minority business contracts for publications including Congressional Quarterly, Forbes, American Banking, and Jobs Watch. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Byrne, and stepmother Ann Byrne. He is survived by his children, James L. Byrne (Mirabel Molina Byrne) and Annie Jay, and grandchildren, Jessica and Madison Byrne and Melannie Jay, as well as his brother Patrick Byrne (Deborah Byrne), and his children, Sean and Kathleen Byrne. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 1006 Larch Ave, Takoma Park, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, please donate to National Public Radio or Our Lady of Sorrows parish.

Jim loved music! He shared with me his appreciation especially of Irish and Scottish folk music and the authentic artists who would come over from the motherland and perform for loving, sing-along audiences. Jim loved politics and policy! He enjoying sharing his deep knowledge of what seemed to me the History of Everything, rivaled only, in my opinion, by Robert Reich; I learned a lot from him. Jim loved talking about his son and daughter, too; his apartment was dotted with photos of them.

I met Jim in 1990 during the local election campaign of former Takoma Park Mayor Steve Del Giudice to the Prince George's County Council; Jim was a tireless, positive influence on the whole team. Jim was always up for anything -- museums, hikes, hot tea and discourse. He would lend or give you anything he could. He was a fine writer. He also was an avid ride-sharer before it was "cool." I am heartbroken that he was taken from all of us.

My memory includes all the Byrne men who have told the best stories over all these years, even when it really didn't begin as much of a story! Lots of smiles and encouragement for the memories! Thanks!
Love, Frances G.

Jim & I go back to 1978, almost four decades! Too many memories to list, but I recall how he let me stay with him in his big house on Madison St. for a month in the summer of 1980, without a second thought, which helped me immensely at a time of marital discord.
Since then, usually at his instigation, we went together to countless events, from folk singers to poets to public policy forums to the National Book Fair to the Nationals. I cherish all those memories.
He was also a tireless promoter of my book, LIES MY TEACHER TOLD ME, giving copies to so many people that I fear I may have to warn Simon & Schuster of Jim's passing, lest they wind up with too many remaindered copies on their hands!
I shall keep his memory alive as long as I am able.

Jim Byrne was the first editor of Tax Notes magazine, which has been published by Tax Analysts for nearly 50 years. As editor, he helped to establish the magazine's reputation for in-depth reporting and sophisticated tax policy analysis. Jim was also a good friend to the group of individuals who worked at Tax Analysts during its formative years, keeping them in touch with one another by sponsoring periodic get-togethers. He will be greatly missed.

To the Byrne family! I'm sending my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Isn't it sad how fleeting life can prove to be today. This was not God's purpose for mankind, so God promises that very soon now he will completely eliminate all things that causes pain and suffering including death.
