JAMES DAY Obituary

JAMES E. DAY, JR.
James Earnest Day, Jr. a life-long resident of the Gaithersburg area who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, died suddenly January 18, 2014. He was 86. Jim Day, whose career included work at the Pentagon, former Atomic Energy Agency and IBM, took pride in his wit, his landscaping talents and his family. Jim Day graduated from Gaithersburg High School and the Abbot School of Arts in Washington, D.C. While at Abbot, he met Frances Lundquist of Silver Spring when, being one of the few students with a car, he gave her rides to class. In addition to his wife, Jim Day is survived by daughter Janet Day of New York, sons Garrett Day of Washington State and David Day of Maryland, their wives Karen Cipriano Day and Cathy Parr Day, and granddaughters Alexis Day and Alyssa Day. A memorial service at a later date is pending.

Jim, I worked with you, learned from you, laughed with you and created with you some special programs in IBM that reached their targets on a very pointed and spirited level. You helped us all laugh at ourselves, and your brilliant, outrageous wit helped us avoid taking events and fortunes too seriously. In that, you were the absolute best I have ever seen or hope to see. I'm so sorry that we drifted apart because of time, distance and circumstance over the past many years. I'm sorry, too, that I wasn't there to say goodbye. Rest in peace, old friend. ~~wlm
