JAMES ELKEY Obituary

James H. Elkey, Jr. (Age 73)
Of Berryville, VA, formerly of Alexandria, VA, was born into a military family in Tokyo, Japan, in December 1947, and died August 9, 2021, in Winchester Medical Center, VA, of acute myeloblastic leukemia. He was predeceased by his father, James H. Elkey (LTC retired, US Army). He is survived by his mother Lillian Elkey; and his sisters Patricia Elkey O'Neill (Garry) and Cynthia Elkey (Grayson Poats). He is also survived by nieces Pamela O'Neill (Nic Blackburn and their daughters Samantha and Lilly) and Rachael Evans (Peter Curran and their son William), and nephew Robert O'Neill. Jim donated his body to the Virginia State Anatomical Program for education and research. Cremated remains will be returned to the family when the education/research is finished.  Jim attended Hammond High School in Alexandria, Va., in the 60s. He served in the Air Force in the early 1970s. He became certified as a computer technician. For many years he had a home painting business. However, he was happiest when he was delivering flowers for Karin's Florist or Open Blooms, and delivering auto parts for Advance Auto. He enjoyed being outside and meeting customers instead of being in an office. Jim marked 28 years of sobriety this year and was active in AA in Martinsburg, WV, for many years. He sponsored members and ran an online business selling AA items.  Jim was an avid sports enthusiast. When he wasn't playing or umpiring softball for various leagues (he was a founding member of the Old Dominion Softball Umpires Association), or playing golf, he would likely be watching sports on TV. A memorial golf tournament and celebration of Jim's life are being planned for Spring 2022.
