James Howson Obituary

HOWSON

JAMES MUIR HOWSON

James Muir Howson (62), loving husband, uncle, scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America, and federal level first responder passed unexpectedly on November 27, 2022. His family is devastated by this loss and grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the community.

Jim was born in Berkeley Heights, NJ to Louis and Zelmira Howson and grew up in Colts Neck, NJ. Jim graduated from Marlboro (NJ) High School in 1978 and went on to Rutgers University, completing his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1984. After college, Jim pursued a personal calling to help others and serve his community as an EMT/paramedic, beginning as a member of the Colts Neck First Aid Squad. Jim was also a courageous first responder at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Jim filled the lives of those around him with acts of service as an Emergency Manager in the Diplomatic Security Department of the U.S. Department of State, a significant contributor to the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) well as a long-standing Scout Leader. His presence is sorely missed, and his loss is deeply felt across his immediate family as well as his expanded family of first responders and healthcare professionals.

Jim is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife Sandy Howson and his brothers and their families, David of Woodbridge, NJ and Robert and his wife Julie and their children Emma and Wesley.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held at a future date. Details of the event will be provided by the family through social media platforms. Donations may be made in Jim's memory to Boy Scouts of America, American Cancer Society, and U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

I worked with Jim at Matagamon in the summer of 1980 and want to express my condolences for your loss. He was a good person.

I wish to express my deepest condolences. Jim was a colleague and a friend for many years. I first met Jim as a paramedic student He was the clinical coordinator at Hackensack University Medical Center. Jim was very supportive and made my student time a great experience. Later Jim was my boss as an employee at Hackensack. He was a great boss.....always compassionate and approachable. Jim was a role model for how a boss and a mentor should be, and he undoubtedly helped so many people. Over the years as I moved up in the ranks I always remembered how well Jim treated me and I aspired to do the same. Thank you Jim for being a great friend and colleague. You will be truly missed.

Dear Sandy, David, Robert, Julie Emma and Wesley,
Words cannot express my feelings at the loss of our dear, dear friend and colleague of my late husband Ray. He was such a part of our lives for so many years. Just recently I met up with him to attend Emma´s wonderful performance in the Atlantic Highlands.
Know how he deeply loved all of you and was so proud of Emma and Wesley and all that you have accomplished in your young lives.
Know that he is at peace and will always be with you when you ask for guidance.
God Bless all of you as you mourn the loss of Jim in your lives and know you will see him again and that meeting will be glorious.
Love,
Pat Hanbury
