James Robert Price, 80, born and raised in Montgomery, AL, died Monday, September 24, 2007 at his home in Montgomery. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA. Burial will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA.
Mr. Price enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 and served in Japan as a counterintelligence officer after the end of World War II. After completing his military service he earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Alabama following by an M.A. in International Relations from School of the Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. He spent 34 years in service to his country in the military, the Central Intelligence Agency and in the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress. Fluent in Japanese, Indonesian and Spanish, he had a career that took him to Japan, Indonesia, throughout Europe and to North Africa. During a break in government service he
spent several years as the executive director of a refugee relief organization.
Music was a great love of his life. Having began studying the French Horn while in junior high school, he maintained his love for that instrument his entire life and played in a number of marching and concert bands during his military and collegiate days and later in life became a major figure in the concert music scene in northern Virginia where he raised his family.
In 2002 he returned to Montgomery to live out his final years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosamond Grant; two sisters, Jean Lewis and Betty Swift; his two sons, Jim (Marjory) Price and David (Paula) Price, his stepson, Robert (Tammy) Grant; two grandchildren, James and Michael Price; and five step-grandchildren; Jessie, Sean and Eva Pattison, Amy and Katie Grant. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Mclean Symphony, Suite 115-172, 1350 Beverly Road, McLean, VA 22101.endcol

Jim was a lovely individual. When I first joined the Congressional Research Service, Jim heard through the grapevine that I played flute and he took it upon himself to get me to play in a community orchestra. This extension of interest and kindness opened up many musical doors for me and I was able to find my niche. Jim was delightful to engage in conversation. He made CRS a wonderful and caring community. He will be missed.

My first job in automated information systems as a young librarian was in an office of the CRS section headed by Jim Price. He was a fair boss, and gave us lots of opportunities to try new projects and grow in the job. I didn't know he spoke Spanish, let along Japanese and Indonesian, but it doesn't surprise me in the least. Jim was curious about everything, and forward thinking. I am very saddened by the news of his passing, and wish every condolence to his family. Sincerely, Susan David
