JAMES VANCE Obituary

VANCE JAMES HOWARD VANCE, III After a brief battle with cancer, James Howard Vance, III of Silver Spring, MD, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Vance was born on January 10, 1942 in Ardmore, PA, predeceased by his parents, Eleanor and James Howard Vance, Jr. He received a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Cheyney State University and became a life-long member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, recently receiving his 50-year jacket and pin. Vance taught English in the Philadelphia Public School System while simultaneously reporting for the "Philadelphia Independent" Newspaper and was a featured reporter at radio station, WHAT-AM. In 1968 he got his first break in TV news as a reporter for WKBS. In 1969, Vance began his career at NBC4 Washington, where he worked for nearly 50 years. He became a household name in 1972 after becoming an anchor, covering local and national news. Vance covered the inaugurations of 12 presidents and all seven of the District of Columbia's mayors. Vance was known for his on-air banter with his fellow anchors. He and his long-time broadcast partner, Doreen Gentzler, spent nearly 30 years always delivering the highest rated local news programs. "Jim and Doreen" were one of the longest-running anchor teams in the country. Vance was a recipient of many awards, including 25 Emmy Awards and was often embarrassed by the wealth of recognition bestowed upon him for his work in journalism, education and community. Vance was a natural story teller and he will always be known for "Vance's View," his weekly dose of reality to viewers, whether they agreed with him or not. His previous marriages to Margo L. Vance (deceased) and Barbara Schmidt-Vance ended in divorce. He married Kathy McCampbell in 1987, but they later separated. Mourning his passing are daughters, Dawn and Amani Vance; son, Brendon Pinkard (Hanoi); grandchildren, Drew Adams, Sloan and Gavin Pinkard; and his beloved life partner, Christina Eaglin. Interment will be private. A memorial celebration for family and friends will be held later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greater Washington Urban League Jim Vance Scholarship, benefitting at-risk students in Ward 8, Contributions should be sent to GWUL, 2901 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009 (www.gwul.org).

I remember when my father first turned on Chanel 4 News and would listen to Jim Vance every evening, Monday thru Friday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. I didn't get the full meaning of what it was to listen to Mr. Vance until I got older. I would hurry to get home from work, still living with my parents at the time and I would listen to his Commentaries. He would tell it how he felt it and didn't care who liked it or not. I remember when he would take rides on his motorcycles and that program when he was decorating his house for Christmas. It was so funny because he was getting frustrated because there was a Christmas ornament he couldn't find. And then I watched when he and Susan Kidd and George Michaels were laughing so hard and interrupted Susan Kidd and said, "Wait a minute! Wait a minute!" So he could look at it again and laugh. I miss him so much. MFSB wrote a song for him - Mr. Vance's them song, My Mood. If you all have a chance and haven't had a change to listen to it. I am in Georgia now, but still miss him, Joe Krebs and George Michaels. and the Chanel 4 News Crew.

I still look for him to be broadcasting the news with Doreen. To me, they were the dynamic duo. Jim is still very much missed. Love and prayers to his family and his anchor partner Doreen on this day.

Seeing Jim's picture again brought a warmth to my heart that is all to infrequently felt. For many years during our stay in Northern Virginia, we invited Jim into our home every night, and he came as an old friend. He was three days older than I, and was taken all too soon. He will always be missed in the Tilson household.

Our country, our famiies, lives, spirits and hearts are broken and lost. Fear, dispair and pain are in people's eyes. We need Jim Vance, right here, right now. In times like these, through his own life lessons, Jim Vance could speak to and soothe our souls. He provided that "Mustard-Seed" of faith. Touching lives was Jim Vance's gift from God.... I know he touched mine.

I look at everything thats going on in our country, and around the globe and wish you were still here. To hear and feel your reporting genius during these times would be a dream come true. Often I say, what if Jim Vance was here what would he say, do, or what would he feel in the current climate were in? You, Jim Vance, are forever missed and your viewers including myself still have a piece of our hearts that is still missing you. Its like you were my family our family. Continue to rest in eternal peace.

It's still hard to be you aren't here.We really could use you right now on the News. There's so much going on since you left this place. But if. you were here you would lighten it up little on the News. I can still remember you laughing on the News about that poor model. The one that kept falling down on the runway. *** You are truly miss here and on the News especially. Until we all unite once again, we will think of the memories. I know you're probably broadcasting in Heaven.Gone to soon, but always in our hearts.

Mr. Vance was keynote speaker at my graduation in1973 at Ballou High School. He gave the most beautiful speech ever. In 2011 I was at the Giant food store in Silver Spring MD paying for my food when I heard a familiar voice. I told the clerk that voice sounded like Jim Vance of News 4. She said that is him. I turned around and was so surprised to see him. I said hi Mr. Vance, what are you doing here? He laughed and said "I'm shopping for my food and headed for the door. I don't know why I was so shocked that he did his own shopping. In my mind I'm thinking he had someone to do his shopping.. I watched him go out the door with his groceries wishing I had thanked him for speaking at my graduation. I've always regretted that I didn't that day. Then I attended the celebration of the mural on Ben's Chilli Bowl wall. I was there at the beginning until the end. Unfortunately it was so hot outside that I wanted to get a slurpee from the 7-11 and play my dc lottery. When I got back to the celebration I couldn't believe it was ending. I stayed around for a while longer to take more pics of the wall not knowing that Jim Vance was there until I saw it on the news. Another chance I missed to thank him!!! Well, Mr Vance I'm going to thank you now for being the best speaker at my graduation. Condolences to your family and friends. You will be truly missed.

As a kid I thought the news was boring until I saw beautiful faces like mine. Watching Jim Vance, Maureen Bunyan, Renee Poussaint, JC Hayward and the late Max Robinson was incredible. Mr. Vance was one in a million; I will always remember the model shoe trip (funny) because Jim Vance and George Michael keep laughing. Mr. Vance had a serious side that stuck to the core, and the honesty that came with it was unforgettable.

These famous faces of the DMV will live on in our history cultural forever. Mr. Vance, may your beautiful soul rest in eternal peace.

May the family, colleagues, and friends of the late Jim Vance have comfort during this time and always, amen.

News was GREAT when Jim Vance was on! DC News Channel 4 rocked...and I was sad to move to another county losing my ability to get this Channel that I had watched for over 20 years. DC lost a l-e-g-e-n-d! He took to task anything and everything that didn't fit into the mold of acceptable...and for this, Mr. Vance, I thank you SO much. You challenged people who were feared by others. That's unbiased news reporting! And you were SUCH a wordsmith. You could dress up a sentence and put a tux on it so elegantly! I admire that. I really admire that. I hurt with the same pain as those who knew you, yet I never met you. May God keep your family in his care and may your soul rest with His angels!

Family of Jim Vance,
Jim Vance was the WOW factor. He spoke at my sons' high school graduation. He was as real as they get. His infectious laugh captured my heart as it did with many of us I am sure. Jim had the triple S effect going on: Smile, Sexy and Swag. If you watched WRC-4 News, you could tell Jim loved his work, because he gave us his best and he was proud of it. He deserved all of the awards and accolades that was bestowed upon him. My sincere condolences goes out to his beloved family and his dear colleagues at WRC-4. Rest in Peace, my brother.

Jim Vance will surely be missed. He was an icon in Washington DC. Everyone knew Jim Vance. I have a picture of he and I taken when I happen to run into him at a Starbucks in Silver Spring. He was kind and really sweet to me. He was definitely one of the best news anchors in broadcasting and to have remained in the game at NBC for almost 50 years speaks of his professionalism. He will be missed always. Bye Jim, rest in peace.

Vance was the voice and conscience of DC. He was a man with the rare ability to transcend racial, economic, political lines, and boundaries. I was a young kid when he showed up in 1969. He has always been a part of my life. There was nothing like that News 4 team; that had a great run from the late 80's until recently. Sadly, there will never be another team like that, or another Jim Vance. We were lucky and blessed to have had him in our lives. We've all benefited from his presence. May he rest in peace, but may his memory and legacy not be forgotten. One last thing, he was a teacher. And for those who teach and have taught (like me): Once a teacheralways a teacher. And although he left the profession formally because of the administrators, he was also teaching us through his actions, words and deeds. All I can say is: Take care my man.

It was 1984, and Jim and I both received journalism awards at the University of the District of Columbia. My 8-year-old daughter knew about my award; it was not a big thing...until I told her I would share the stage with Jim Vance. She got excited and asked -- no, told me to get his autograph, which I did. (Told him the story; he smiled and signed.) It was her text that delivered the news of Jim's transition. She said she was shaken. Clearly, Jim was a role model for so many young men and women of Washington. He IS one of a kind. God Bless All Who Loved Jim.
