Jayton D. Patterson Obituary

Jayton Patterson was so close to returning from Iraq that he had sent a package of his things home to his wife, Stephanie. She got it the same day she got word of his death. Patterson, 26, of Sedley, Va., was killed Jan. 15 by an improvised explosive device in Iraq's Babil province. He was based at Camp Lejeune. Drawn to the uniform in part because both his grandfathers served in the Navy, Patterson told his parents that serving in the military was something he was called to do. He spent his first four years in the Marines on White House security detail and went with the president to the Pentagon and the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 attacks. He is also survived by a 15-month-old daughter, Claire. "He left us a beautiful granddaughter," said his father, Frank Patterson. "We can see him in her eyes."

I miss you Jayton, there´s not a day that goes by where I don´t think of you. That deployment was definitely a rough one. It felt like every week we lost someone. I remember right before you had gone out on your last patrol we were all hanging out inside of our tent talking about playing cards or going to the phone center when you got back. As a fellow Sgt you and I held a special bond. You and I would always bounce ideas off of each other before heading out on patrol. When we kept getting attacked DAILY while building the forward FOB you and I kept yellowing each other that we were ready for this!! There´s so many things I wish I would´ve said to you bro. You´re a damn good marine and I´m damn proud to not only say I served with you I´m combat but to also call you my friend! It was an HONOR being in the presence of a Hero like you! SEMPER FI!! Sgt. I bought her a Redskins jersey from the Pro Football Hall of Fame when I went last year. It was an awesome trip. I wish you could have been there with me. Claire is spoiled rotten. You would be so proud of her. She is so smart. She is the most awesome kid I have ever met. Not a day goes by that we don't miss you and appreciate what you sacrificed for us. I wear your dog tags every day that I got from your package you sent Steph right before you were supposed to come back. Me and Hunter both got superman tatoo's just like you. It seems like just yesterday we were partying together and drinking miller high life the whole week before you left for boot camp. I can't believe its been 6 1/2 years. I kept that letter in my safe and gave it to steph just like you asked me to. I think it meant alot to her. It was my privilege to keep it safe for you. I would give anything to go out to the 4H center and play one last game of basketball with you. It was an honor and a pleasure to have been a part of your life. 8/9/2011"

Jayton was a great friend, an awesome roommate and an even better brother. Though not blood related, he might as well have been. He took me home several times and his family treated me as one of their own sons. He is constantly in my thoughts and it feels like it was just yesterday we were drinking beer together. He also helped me buy my truck, (LeAnn is what we called her) and I think he wanted me to get it just so he could drive it too. I miss you bro and wish I had the chance to talk to you after I left D.C. Till we see each other again.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

He taught me more than any other person could possibly teach me about life, in the short year that I had the privaledge of knowing him. Jayton believed so strongly in what we did and looked after us all in his squad. This man was a hero and the reason I do what I do today. Jayton, Sgt. 1958 thru 1964 with one year timeout on the USS Sea Leopard (SS-483) in Norfolk, VA and again
at CinclantFlt, Norfolk, VA.
I also served 21 years in the military - 11 Navy Submarines and
10 US Army (switched so I could serve in Vietnam (served twice and once in Desert Storm). I had the
highest admiration for Chief Patterson. I talked with him shortly before his death. I would
appreciate news from his family.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Sgt Pat Well i really dont know what else to say except you were one of the best marines ive ever served with, you always kept the plt motivated no matter what kind of rutt we were stuck in. The best memories i have of you are when we went on our long range recon patrol shortly before you passed. It was great because you were the leader and every marine that was with us on that gruelish 4 day patrol would have followed you anywhere and thats what makes a great leader. I miss you and that goes for all the rest of our brothers from 1stbn 2nd marines.

He loved his Marines and I loved him as a brother, friend, and fellow Marine. He will be dearly missed always in our hearts and minds. We will meet again in a better place, and I know he looks down on us all, and keeps that hawk eyes attention to make sure we are steadfast in our ways, and guided along the path of rightousness. Love Ssgt David A. Marino. "See you on the Battlefield my Friend".

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

When I lost my son, Travis, in July, I also learned of Jayton's death. I remember them attending Ivor Elementary school together, and I remember he was a very smart, bright, and sweet young man. God bless you all, and be with you. Jayton was a true hero, and I thank him for his supreme sacrifice to his country. With prayers and thoughts of his family, friends, and loved ones,

I went to Tidewater with Jayton, my sister graduated with him also. Jayton always had a smile on his face and always in a good mood. I am very sorry for you and your family for having to lose him. I know that he will forever be in my memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

Dear Claire,

I graduated from TA with your dad. I hope you will always know that he died for your freedom and mine. The true Americans are those fighting for us and making a better life for those in other countries. I'm not sure I have the courage your dad had and I'm not sure that we can say we are real Americans...I'm just grateful that I can call myself that. I hope your dad passed on his passion for life to you. He always put his whole heart into whatever he attempted. He showed us this in school as he let everyone know he was a Christian. Jayton was never ashamed of what he believed. Neither should you. I know Jayton and God are watching over you. Be strong, have faith and always remember there is someone in heaven on your side.
