Jean Oberstar Obituary

Jean Kurth Oberstar of Bethesda, MD died on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. She was 79 years old.

Born in New Orleans, LA, Jean was the daughter of Charles and Mary Denechaud. She was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Academy and Louisiana State University.

After college, Jean moved to Washington, DC and, in 1971, married Charles B. Kurth. She helped her husband manage Kurth & Co. Inc., and aviation consulting firm, and became its president after her husband's death in 1991. She is survived by their son, Charles B. Kurth, Jr., and daughter, Corinne Q. Berger.

In 1993, Jean married Congressman James L. Oberstar. While continuing her work as an aviation consultant, she also became increasingly involved in philanthropic and community activities, serving on the board of Mongomery Hospice, advocating for those who provide assiatnce for the eldery, and volunteering at ManorCare.

Jean was a voracious reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast. She will be much remembered for her love of travel, cooking, and independence—all of which she imparted to her children.

A private ceremony for family will be held in the coming weeks. Memorial contributions may be made to S.O.M.E. and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
